Did You Have To Do A Bowel Prep The Night Before Lap Band Surgery?

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is in the morning. My Dr.'s office is having me do a bowel prep tonight. ( have to drink a small bottle of magnesium citrate and be on the potty all night long). I'm just wondering if this is the norm for most surgeons? I know this is what is done for lower GI surgeries and Colonoscopies etc., just wondering why they are having me do it for this surgery?

I've seen quite a few folks mentioning it, but I didn't have to do one before my surgery.

I did not. Just another thing that differs by surgeon. Frankly, if you've been on a 2 week liquid diet, you're pretty much empty anyway. I was afraid I'd wet myself on the OR table, so right before I walked into the OR, (yes, NYU hospital makes you walk in - it was horrible) I stopped to pee.

I didn't have to do a pre op diet or bowel prep. My instructions were just to eat soft foods the day before surgery.

I did the two weeks of liquids for pre op and then the day before was clear liquids only. No bowel clean out. I don't think that there would of been anything to come out. I was pretty clean after the two weeks.

My surgery is tomorrow too. My pre-op diet has been 2-3 shakes a day and 1 salad. I took my magnesium citrate disgusting drink around 6:00 and so far.........nothing. Just heartburn from the lemon flavor and burning on my tongue from the drink. Ugh......

How are you feeling now????

Nope, no pre-op diet (my doc just said to not gain any weight) or bowel prep the night before. Just NPO after midnight the night before surgery.

Even with liquids, something will come out.

I had to do it. When I first smelled the stuff, I thought, "not bad... cross between lemonade and red bull". When it hit my lips, I thought, "not good, cross between motor oil and ass". It wasn't as big of a party I had thought though. 001_tongue.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
