The lap-band is garbage. It doesn't work the way they say it will and there is no support when you get it. I paid $17000.00 for my lap-band surgery in Toronto just to have it fail and make me throw up at every meal. If anyone should be getting a weight loss surgery, it should be gastric bypass.August 8th they have removed my band and replaced it with gastric bypass and it was the best decision of my life. I was 22 and weighing in at 396lbs. Now I've just had my 23rd birthday and i am 150lbs lighter and feeling great. With the lap-band there was no support and it was heart breaking. With gastric bypass you have a 6 month program that you follow before you get your surgery date, and let me tell you, the program and the people are truly amazing. Remember weight loss surgery helps but its not the solution.

I think for you this may be the case, and its hard to hear you had such a rough time with the band. Each individual's body, and insurance is different however. As far as support, my insurance required me to do 6 months before my surgery date, and it was 100% covered. Many people have issues with gastric bypass too, oftentimes MORE issues. Going in, your doctor should have told you the band was not a quick process, but its usually more long term. I'm glad you found something that worked for you, but I think in general blanket statements ("The lap-band is garbage") cause more harm that good.

I agree with the above poster but it also sounds like your surgeons office doesn't offer much post op support or education of how the band works, and how you have to work with it; both of which are crucial in your success. Im sorry that you did not get support like I (and many others) are getting but happy that you have found what works for you.

Every WLS surgery has it's problems. The problem with bypass is Mal-absorption, and weight gain after a year or 2,

That's not the ones that worry me though... Everyone that I know that had this type of surgery has passed away. I don't mean do to Old Age or Disease either.

I wish you good health, and please take care of yourself.

Remember weight loss surgery helps but its not the solution.

This is the truest part of your message. Everyone has to find the right surgery for them and then work with it to obtain the optimal results. Failure to do so can result in your chosen surgery "failing"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
