Recovery..how Long Until I Can Go Back To Work After Lap Band Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, newbie here. In fact, this is my first post! I have an appointment for my initial consultation on Jan 4th and im sure I will get this answer at that appointment but I cant wait that long! I need to know how fast you all were able to go back to work. I have a pretty physically demanding job and need to know how long I will be out. I can be on light duty if needed. Im excited about being able to go back to work after some of this weight comes off and hopefully feel a little better at the end of the day!!!

Happy to meet you all and hope to make some new friends here teeth_smile.gif

I'm going back tomorrow, which is 6 days after surgery. But my job is not very physically demanding. I could have probably went back a few days ago, but just decided not to rush it.

I went back on day 4. I am a grocery checker and just did not lift heavy things. I was sure tired at the end of my shift and slept good that first week back. That being said I think it depends on the person and how well you handle the surgery. Some need more time then others, I have always been one to bounce back quickly. Good luck

Everyone is different, from what I have read here.

I was banded on a Monday, took the week off. I was climbing the walls by day 3 and started running errands. Day 4&5, I could not stay away from the office, although I did fatigue quickly and only spent few hours visiting, checking messages, etc.

One week, the following Monday, was my 1 week post-op appointment with the surgeon. He removed all the bandages, released me to go to the gym, soak in a tub, ok to work, etc.

Only restriction was to avoid any heavy lifting for a few more weeks.

Four weeks post surgery I was back for my first fill.

UGH, heavy lifting is 75% of my job! I hope the boss will be alright with me not being able to work at 100%! I'll have to have a talk with her before I have surgery and see how she feels...thanks for the info!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
