Kidney Stones

Recommended Posts

I have kidney stones.. I've never had them before and don't know how I got them. Is it possible, because I can't drink and eat at the same time.. It's cut down on my liquid intake.. And that's how I got them?

ive not heard of that... but then again im only banded since October. But you shouldn't cut down on your liquid intake just because you can't drink while eating. i try to get at least 120 oz. of liquid a day

I went on the Adkins diet many years ago (among many others) and wound up with kidney stones.

My PCP at the time said it was a common complication of a high Protein, high fat diet. I hadn't

heard that before, but I sure had them. I stopped that type of Adkins and never had another one.

Some people say they're as bad as giving birth (I wouldn't know), but I sure don't want another.

Defintely start with increasing Water intake. You should urinate pale yellow urine several times a day. Ask your doc how much water per day...120oz seems like a lot! I THOUGHT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AROUND 64OZ BUT IM NOT SURE...sorry for the caps lock

You need to drink more and yes, a very Protein heavy diet can lead to kidney stones. Look, I know many people advocate it and I know it works great for weight loss and is beneficial for some areas of your health, but it also has downsides and if you're focussing too much on the Protein, you make your body a very acidic environment (which predisposes you to things like gout, cancer, kidney stones). You need to balance out the protein with lots of fruit and vegies which are alkaline foods and I think many bandsters dont do that well, they think they're going great because they drink their Protein shakes and that's all there is to it.

Dont know what your diet is like, just something to consider. Many people are predisposed to kidney stones anyway and many people who are NOT on a high protein diet get them too (and many people on a high protein diet never ever get them), so it really could be something that was always going to happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
