Pcp Says No Alcohol With Lap Band?

Recommended Posts

I have heard six months to a year. My doctor said six months, then occasional wine is ok. No carbonated beverages and no hard liquor. So in other words the last time I had Patron was the last time I will have Patron.

Looks like opinions vary widely from surgeon to surgeon. Mine told me no beer, because the carbonation will stretch the pouch, but hard liquor and wine are ok.

Empty calories. And the effect of the alcohol loosens inhibitions and may cause/allow you to eat things that you normally would avoid. I know a bariatric nurse who says that alcohol will slow weight loss for 3 days.

If I really really really want a drink, I'll have one. I do avoid carbonation. Most of the time I'm happy with having a sip of my husband's drink.

Everyone has to do what is right for them. For me, I wanted to get my weight off quicker. Now that it's mostly gone, I'm a little less strict on myself. YMMV.

Yes it will. The carbonation will effect, cause bloating, and could casue vomiting.

Never been told that.

I have had as many as 2-3 beers at a ball game or at the beach with no problem. Just not with food. But then, I can't drink anything with food or else it will come back up. And not from bloating but from overfilling my pouch.

As far as calories, I find i can go without food for long periods if I want to. So a couple of light beers might be all I have that dy at the game.

Oh ok, I have been told but it could be the individual drinking it and how they drink it. I guess different strokes for different folks.

My PCP also does not understand that the band does not affect the way food is digested or nutrients are absorbed like gastric bypass. Alcohol, once you are healed, is no different whether you are banded or not. It is so-called empty calories but I have a cocktail or a glass of wine every evening...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
