Anesthesia with patients with sleep apnea?

Recommended Posts

did anyone have any problems with their surgery if they had sleep apnea? My doctor wants to have a C-Pap machine in my surgery just in case I need it. I only have a mild case of sleep apnea and dont require one to speep with. After loosing weight they say it gets better or goes away all together. Any one have any problems waking up from Anesthesia after lap band? thanks

I have moderate to severe sleep apnea and have used CPAP for the past five years (pressure of 10). My surgeon also asks that I bring the CPAP machine to surgery. This seems to be the common practice.

However, I've had surgeries recently to repair a fx femur and a tib/fib fx (under general anesthesia about as long as the WLS) and there was no mention of bringing a CPAP.

It seems like a good idea to have your CPAP going during the operation. When the sleep apnea is not treated your body jerks (partially) awake as it needs oxygen. It seems like this jerking could give the surgeon some difficulty if timing was bad (or do they have you tightly strapped down during surgery?)

I'd guess that the anesthesiologist can duplicate CPAP during WLS, but why not use the mask that you know fits and the pressure setting that is well tested.

Ihad severe sleep apnoea and my surgeon insisted I bring my cpap machine to the hospital. that night I wore it and every hour on the hour a nurse checked I was breathing ok. Its just encase your "wake up and breathe" instict doesnt kick in after the anasthetic

other than that I had no probs whatsoever after the anasthetic or during it and I was super obese and a smoker and old, very very old

*sigh

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
