Cindy C 150 Posted November 30, 2011 Do you have a history of clotting? I think that's a decision best made by your surgeon.
tandi04 8 Posted November 30, 2011 My dr. Said it was up to me. I've never had blood clots before so I wasn't sure. I don't really want to do it but if I need to I will.
skinnygrrlatheart 2 Posted November 30, 2011 I have a family history of clots but doctor didn't feel it necessary. My cardiologist put me in meds 2 weeks prior to surgery as a preventative. Good luck.
m1aman 944 Posted December 1, 2011 Obese people are at a higher risk for blood clots. The alternative to not getting one can be pretty grim.
tandi04 8 Posted December 1, 2011 Thanks everyone im going to go ahead and get one just in case.
Cindy C 150 Posted December 1, 2011 If you don't have a history of clotting, I don't really see the need. After surgery walking will stop clots from forming. I knew of a man who had it done and a clot got through anyway. But he was over 700 pounds with a history of clotting. I'm really surprised that a doctor would leave that decision up to the patient. Do whatever makes you comfortable
banditarian 0 Posted December 1, 2011 Only get it when you need it. Remember it must eventually come out. So it's a come back procedure to have it removed a month or so later. So if you don't need it dont get it. Ask about heparin some surgeons give heparin the day o surgery it thins out the blood for a little while while you recover in the next day. Walk after your surgery is best anti clotting precaution you can make. Just walk and be mobile. Laparoscopic surgery doesn't hurt that bad you will be mobile right after. Best of luck and take care. m1aman 944 Posted December 1, 2011 IVC filters are permanent now. It makes no sense to get a temp one. It will protect you the rest of your life. Also don't get your medical advice from any of us. Get the info from your doctor and decide for yourself. Regardless, good luck.
tandi04 8 Posted December 1, 2011 I've tried to get his opinion and he just says its up to me. My only concern is I have a job where I sit for 8 hrs.
cheryl2586 3,053 Posted December 2, 2011 I would in no way get a filter if you have never had a blood clot. I sit all day too and never had an issue all you have to do is get up and walk around once in a while and pump your feet while sitting. Its a surgical procedure that you dont need on top of the band. Its not necessary you will be moving around dont do it.

Banterwonder 63 Posted December 2, 2011 It concerns me that your doctor says, "it's up to you"?!!! I would want my docor to give more guidance than that.
