Why Is It That Americans Don't Consider Getting The Lap Band Procedure Overseas ?

Recommended Posts

@bromo,I don't make statements without assuming I'm going to met with resistance. I feel if you cannot handle others statements then you shouldn't post. I'm not saying the care there is of less standards but I having lived abroad in numerous places and have witness the things that occurs in the health care field and it is my opinion that a lot of Americans have a negative outlook on (international healthcare) anything that isn't American. Its as if most believe life does not exist outside of the U.S. of A.

@54Shirley If you are suggesting that Dr abroad are not up to the U.S.A. standards I would have to refute this. If you haven't noticed many Americans doctors are internationally taught. regular_smile.gif

On my Surgeons end, they all go to Switzerland throughout the year, and are sharpened up with new Techniques in Schooling. This is a REQUIREMENT...

Even my band is installed the European way. Yes there is more than one way you know...

He chooses the European way because less chance of slippage. That is his way, and that is on every patient of his. That is in the U.S.A.... I am walking proof of his work, and that's good enough for me.

So why travel when you can get it done here.

future, I don't think anyone has the right to say who should or should not be posting here. Many people come to the boards for many different things. Personality types are spread all across the board here. I post at several boards and the tone of each one is different, but I would never take it upon myself to tell anyone that they shouldn't be posting if they didn't meet my standards.

I personally do not think care is better or worse in Europe or elsewhere. It is just that I live in the US, my insurance covers me here, and I have access to some of the best doctors anywhere. I live in the city which houses UAB which ranks in the top five hosptials in the US in many instances. We have a very diverse population due to people from all over the world coming here to study and research medicine. My reasons for not considering surgery in another country have nothing to do with level of care, but with finances and logistics.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
