Not Taking In Enough Calories.

Recommended Posts

I need some advice.. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I am having a difficult time getting in my fluids and Protein. I went through an extensive nutrition program before the surgery and they pounded in my brain to make sure I'm drinking 48-64 oz of liquid and taking in 60-80 grams of protein per day. I just can't do it. Yesterday I ate only 34g of protein, 200 calories and only about 24oz of Fluid. I have been having some major gas issues. Every time I take a sip, I feel like I have to burp but it won't come up. Super frustrating. I did go buy the gas x strips last night since most of you talk about them on here. Helped tremendously.

It's not that I don't feel hungry.. I've already had my stomach growl out of hunger a couple times, but as soon as I take a sip or two of Protein Shake, I'm done and the burps and hiccups start. Ugh. I have no fill in my band. It is empty and I won't have my first fill until my 2 month check in.

Did anyone else have similar issues to this. I don't want to hurt my body by not getting enough fluids or protein.. Do you have any tips for taking in liquids early after surgery?

Thank you for your support. I appreciate everyone's input here.. I would be lost without your stories and advice!

Angela

You just had your surgery 3 days ago? Right now is about healing. There's no way you're going to get that much in yet. Listen to your body. If it doesn't want it, don't force it! Just make sure you get enough Water to avoid dehydration. Keep a bottle of water within your reach and sip on it all day.

The first week post op, I had maybe 200-300 calories per day, with maybe 25 grams Protein, second week, was better maybe 600-700 calories with maybe 50-60 grams protein. So each week got better. It took me 5 weeks to get back up to 1200 calories and once I did the weight started coming off again. I can't seem to lose at to low of calories. So just give it time.

I'm day 4 post op, it's been good except for the gas pain that you're describing which is worse today. Gas x isn't helping a great deal so I'm trying benefibre. I think they Protein load you before hand to help with healing in this after surgery stage. I think it's expected we will not get more than a few hundred calories for awhile, best to stay hydrated. I have to be on Clear Liquids till after day 6 post-op then I can have shakes. Have you tried the Isopure that is clear with protein? Maybe it would be easier going down. Stay strong, we'll get through this and be in happy band land soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
