New To Lapbandtalk And Thinking About The Lap Band Procedure

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this site and I am thinking about having the lap band procedure done. Right now my BMI is 42.3 and I have trouble breathing when I walk short distances. I have a full time job with most of my time spent is behind a desk. I am also a full time student working towards my BA Degree. I am married and have 5 children at home. I feel that if I don’t take care of myself, how am I able to take care of my family.

I would like to know the pro and cons about the procedure, because it is better to know all the information before getting the procedure than finding out after it is done. I do have my first Doctors appointment on Dec. 19. I do know that my insurance will cover it because of my BMI. I am aware that this is a big/huge lifestyle change. I have been trying to make some changes before I see my doctor. I have quit smoking, changed my eating habits and am watching my portions during meals.

Hi, and welcome,

You are well on your way. You need to be eating high Protein and low carbs. Drink lots and lots of Water. At least try to get a short walk in everyday or get a gym membership. I know, your days are crammed and perhaps you already do. It is usually about a three to six month process depending on your insurance and surgeon requirements. Use a center of excellence if at all possible.

I wish you well. I have my preop. Feel free to message me if I can help you further. All the best to you,

Melinda

I think you have this figured out, but as a bandster, let me make sure you know this: THIS IS NOT A MAGICAL CURE. There is no lap band for your mind or your mouth.

That being said, its a wonderful tool that gives many of us just the right push we need to overcome our eating tendencies. Your will power is stronger when you're not ACTUALLY hungry! Best of luck to you!

I am 13 days post op. For me the whole process took 1 1/2 months. I opted to postpone surgery a little while due to family emergency. I wouldnt change a thing!!! But as said before it will not change your mind or mouth, but I found once I was off of carbs I don't crave them near as much anymore. I am new here as well and would love to be LBT friends. Keep in touch!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
