New To Site But Not New To Lapband

Recommended Posts

My name is Misty and I had the lapband surgery in March of this year. I made the decision to have surgery after I was dignosed with fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. I never realized that by being fat I was doing so much damage to my liver. I am a mom of two boys 5 and 2 and I could not die and leave them without a mother and all my diets had never stuck. After some long thinking and praying I decided to have surgery. I live in Conway, AR so I used Dr Baker from Little Rock and he is great. I started this journey at 288.5 lbs and I am sad to say I am only down to 250.4 on my last appoitment on 11/7/2011. I have learned a lot along the way and continue to learn everyday. I realize that it is not how fast I loose the weight but that I continue to loose the weight and learn to eat differently and teach my children and husband good eating as well. The reason I have only lost 38 lbs is becuase of me and only me. Ok well it might have been those 2 months that I told the nurse I needed a bigger fill and she did not listen but I also did not exercise like I should during those first couple of months and I did not eat like I had promised myself I would. I am now at 9.2 with my fills and I am honestly full. I have lost about 10 lbs based on my scale at home since my visit on 11/7 but I never count it until I go back for my monthly appointments. I always get hungry again about 1-2 weeks before a fill but this time it seems different so maybe we found my "honey" spot. My husband is honestly shocked that I can live on the little amount of food I eat but I remind him that I eat to live now and no longer eat for enjoyment. I still struggle with eating slow and probably will for sometime as I change my brain but in the end I hope to be a healthy mom who can play and keep up with her kids..

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
