I take Prilosec and my bariatric surgeon told me I could probably stop taking it. But I see my PCP in December for my semi annual checkup and decided to wait to talk to him about it. I think he put me on it due to the meds I take and I don't want to stop it and start getting heartburn. I get it still if I forget to take the Prilosec at least 30 minutes before taking the other meds. So unless I can come off of the one causing the heartburn, I guess I am stuck taking it.

I was on nexium for one month after surgery. I just got off of it a few days ago and I was scared of how I would feel. I honestly feel no changes at all

I was specifically told to make sure that I kept taking my prescription strength Pepcid. The day I was discharged, the doc told me to take it as soon as I get home because they didn't give it to me in the hospital.

I have been crushing all pills and opening capsules. I empty the capsule on some SF Jello, pudding or applesauce.

I have been on nexium for several years now and am hoping that with the surgery and hernia repair I can come off of it.

I have had to continue taking Omeprezole (prescription, not OTC). I even had the stomach "drape" surgery that is supposed to keep acid from splashing back up into your esophagus. Maybe it does, but my stomach still burns and hurts without the Omeprezole. A doctor told me to start taking Probiotics, but OMG, it just made the reflux WORSE to the point I was having to take double the dose of Omeprezole daily (one in the morning, one at night). After two days, I stopped the Probiotics and the reflux "relaxed" back to just 1 Omeprezole a day.

Normally you should take Omeprezole (Prilosec OTC) for six months after surgery as you help your stomach get used to less food and different food. While you may not experience heart burn from food you may still experience acid reflux because the Protein pumps in your stomach will keep producing as if you're eating the same.

At the very least take it for 28 days after to help your stomach. You do not want acid reflux with the band - the acid just sits there burning horribly for a long time.

Regarding pills - take them whole. DO NOT crush them. DO NOT open them up and dump the contents. You are altering how the medication works by doing that. Even in my green zone I can take those so called "horse pills" that are Gelatin capsules with Fluid or powder in them. They sit in the pouch for less than a minute before dissolving and sliding through to your stomach.

If you do plan on crushing pills or emptying capsules please take every single medication you plan on doing that with to your pharmacist and ask them what you can and cannot do with each pill. For example, Omeprezole (Prilosec OTC) SHOULD NOT be crushed because it's a time release medication.

Even within days of surgery I was fine taking pills. If you can't take a normal pill you are too tight. For elongated pills that can be broken in half you can do that - but please see a pharmacist to make sure you're not risking acute overdose or altering the effectiveness of your medication.

My surgeon puts everyone on Pepcid Complete "Chewable" That way you have no problems taking it.

I was on Prevacid for years... and after being banded, the Pepcid did the job, but I took it daily for at least 6 months.

Now I have Omeprazole, in the house just in case I need it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
