Lapband Surgery Was 1 Week Ago. A Bit Of Trouble So Far.

Recommended Posts

I am a 23 year old Australian women. My weight was 137kgs, it is currently 128kgs and I hope to get down to 65-70kgs. I had lapband surgery 8 days ago and I am wondering if this was the best decision. I thought about it for 3 years before I made the decision to go through with the surgery, and was so excited about the idea of some more help to assist me to become a healthier person. After the surgery, I was in so much pain I thought I was going to die. I dont think my pain was properly managed. I could not get up to walk until more than 6 hours after the operation, and 8 days later I still need help from my family to get out of bed.

Three days ago my main wound started weeping a brown liquid. I wasn't too concerned because it didn't smell bad and wasn't red or sensitive. I went to my GP and he cleaned it, gave me some important information and sent me on my way. I called my surgeon just as a precaution and he talked down to me like I was a disobedient child. He told me that I went against his instructions even though he did not actually communicate any post-op advice or care. I am now on antibiotics and will be seeing my surgeon on Monday.

I am worried that I will need more surgery, I am worried that it might be infected, I am worried that my lapband may need to come out, I am worried that I might need to take more time off work and I am just scared because I dont have any information.

I know that this surgery is going to change my life. I am trying to be really positive but it is hard while I am in pain and unsure of my future.

Hopefully the next time I log on here I will be able to say that I am just a paranoid hypochondriac.

Talk then,

Simone

  • I haven't had my surgery yet, what hurts? Is it the gas pains I hear about the first week? If so, I think you are supposed to get up and walk to get the gas moving. I don't know for sure....

Simone I am sorry to hear about your problems, I am sure everything will be fine. I was banded on 11-14-11 so it has been 6 days and yes the first few days are not fun, i have been feeling better each day that goes by. Gas has been my biggest problem and yes walking around helps get it moving on out!

I hope things turn out ok for you. Like you I did this to make myself healthier and happier, lets both hope we have a happilhy ever after story!

Sorry about your pain, I just had my lapband surgery yesterday and I have been doing alright. Shoulder pain and stomach pain from the gas. Do not understand why you were not walking around as soon as surgery was done. We had to get up and walk immediately. I walked 6 times around the halls before I could leave the surgery area. And they have advised me to walk 10 minutes every hour for the next several days. Hope you do better as the days go by. Just thought I would try to let you know these others out here that care.

The gas pain did hurt a lot; mostly in the shoulders, chest and abdomen.

The worst pain was under my main wound. I didn't realise how much you use your stomach muscles until I had the surgery. Everytime I coughed, sneezed, laughed or moved I was in agony. Unfortunately my sister and her kids were in my room when I came out of surgery, and now my four-year-old neice knows a bunch of new swear words.

I was expecting to be up walking around within an hour after the surgery; I was shocked that I was not able to move.

I did not receive any advice to walk around. Looking back, I know that I did not get the information I required to get through the recovery. I did not receive much information at all.

Being on this website has really helped me to understand more about my surgery. I am very happy to have a good support network with information directly from people who know what I am going through.

Hi ! So Sorry that you are having this problem. It sound that your surgeon and his team didn't take the time to give you the proper information to help you recover. I was banded on 11/9/11 and I was well informed before and during the process. I did have ALOT of gas but other than that I had no real pain just being uncomfortable. I was told to use gas X it helped a little but the best thing forr me was walking and more walking. I hope that things work out for you. I will be praying for you and your recovery.

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. I can only reiterate what everyone had said. Gas x cheewies and walk walk walk. The more I walked the better I felt. I too never realized how much I used my core but walking releases the stiffness and soreness. I hope you start to feel better soon!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
