It's very important to have information. I had my surgery on the 11th November and I thought I knew what was involved but I had zero information.

You need to know that it can be very painful; be prepared for that. Everyone I talked to made it seem like they were fine but I struggled so much. I know that everyone is different but if I had the informstion I probably wouldnt have be so scared when I woke up. Your shoulders, chest and abdomen may hurt from the gas, and your stomach will hurt from the operation. Keep on top of it.

You need to get your body moving as soon as possible. I couldnt get up for over 6 hours but I was moving my arms and legs to get the circulation moving and get the gas out of me.

You also need to make sure that you have plenty of recipes for being on the liquid diet. I am very picky so I am pretty much living off juices and smoothys. If you like Soup get as much Protein as possible. I am really feeling the lack of Protein.< /p>

You also need to keep a close eye on your wounds. Contact your surgeon if you have ANY doubts about how you are healing. Its always better to be safe than sorry in any situation. What may be a little bit of tenderness may turn out to be an infection oloike what I have.

On top of all of that, just be happy about making a positive change in your life. All of these dramas will seem insignificant when you are looking healthy and gorgeous. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

Goodluck.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
