Gas Pain After Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 11/10/11 and have had some pretty bad gas pain since. I noticed in recovery at the hospital that I was burping a lot when trying to drink the Water they gave me. It was pretty funny at the time because I'm not normally a burper. It's not longer funny 5 days out. I have gas pain right above my top incision. I feel like it gets tight and I need to burp, but nothing comes out. I have to drink something sometimes to get a burp out. The pain isn't there all the time, but multiple times a day. I also have more gas pain at night and have a hard time sleeping. My sister was banded on 10/27 and didn't have these problems, so I'm a little worried something is wrong. I've been using those Gas-X dissolvable strpis and they help a little, but not much. Am i experiencing something that is not supposed to be happening? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help me get rid of all of this pain? Please help.

I was also one of the lucky ones too, no gas, no pain. I think what you're experiencing is part of the pain associated with the

gas use to expand your abdomen so the surgeon had room to work. If you're following your doctor's instructions and you're walking a lot and still have

the pain, you might see the doctor, just to give yourself some peace of mind. Good luck.

It's normal and can be pretty freakin painful. I had quite a bout with it myself last night. I spent about 30 minutes patting my chest- starting at the bottom of the sternum and patting up to the collarbone and repeating. I also walked laps in the house. This helped me burp some and get some relief. I've never been good at burping. I don't find the Gas X strips helpful at all. If you have someone at home who can pat your back for you that would help too.

I was banded on Friday, November 18th and the gas pains are horrible! I tried Gas-X strips, peppermint tea and bay leaf tea, all to no avail. However, my aunt suggested Maalox and I was a little leary at first, but it worked! I walk around the house every hour and take 2 teaspoonful of Maalox Extra Strength Cherry flavor (not as bad with the hint of cherry in it regular_smile.gif ) and I can say, I am feeling LOTS better (outside of the pain from the surgery). Good luck to you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
