Calcium supplement??

Recommended Posts

Doing my pre-op diet, I had been taking Viactiv calcium chews. They were wonderful and I loved taking my Calcium. However, at my pre-op consultation, they inform me that I should be taking calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. So, after exhausting myself in all the stores looking for chewable calcium citrate, I ordered some online from opurity. They are awful!!! When I bit into them, I feel like I'm inhaling the powder or something. They are just so chalky and disgusting. And on top of that, I have to take 4 a day for my recommended allowance. What does everyone on here take for their calcium. I would love a pill I could swallow, but if not, something has to be better than these nasty chewables....

I take one I got from a health food store, the brand is Pioneer they are vegetarian and gluten free. It is dark chocolate flavor (but just tastes like chocolate) I take 3 halves a day because that's all I need to get my required Calcium. However when I am done with these I will be taking Citracal petites. They are small and easy to swallow. My sister had the band and she takes these. I also bought opurity brand chewable Multivitamins and hate them as well. I will be looking for a better one when these are gone. I try to chew and swallow as fast as I can. Eeesh they are nasty.

I did see those Citracal petites and thought about getting them, but I didn't know if they would be small enough with the band. If I could just take a pill, that would be awesome!! Do you know if it's just 1 pill a day of the Citracal petities?

But these are Calcium carbonate. My PA told me calcium citrate is better absorbed and should be used instead...

My nutritionist specializes in Bariatric patients. She says that I can chew Tums with each meal and that is fine for calc supp. With the calc carb she says it needs to be separate from your multi vit and also taken with food. My dr agreed with her when I told him. I don't like the taste of any chews and tabs all too big. I do love the tropical Tums tho. I should mention that I eat most of my calc in milk, yogurt and other dairy.

I have 2 different calciums, one is a Gummy (that is awesome!) and the other is a liquid (not so good but deal with it). I have been doing both, like every other day bc the gummies of course have a lot of sugar (they taste like candy!). but the gummies are Citrical Calcium D3 Gummies (yumm) and the liquid is Wellesse Calcium D3. They are both Calcium Citrate! Got them both from Walmart. Hope this helps!. :-)

We need calcium citrate and it should be taken in divided doses .. not all at once. Tums are not adequate no matter who told you that. They are behind the times.

I take Citracal Petites, but have to take them with something warm to make sure they go down. When I was a newer bandster and needed chewables, I used either Bariatric Advantage or Celebrate. If something similar to Viactiv is wanted.. look at Bariatric Advantages Chewy Bites.

One of my nurses who does my fills (who also happens to be banded) suggested I buy Calcium gummies from Target, because they taste great and are cheap. I buy the "Adults' Gummy calcium dietary supplement" by Up&Up for $7.50 for a jar of 100 gummies. I take one in the morning and one in the evening, and I LOVE them, they taste just like candy! I used to do chalky chewables before, and now that I found these I'm never turning back!

These are not cheap but so good - and I've only found them online.

Calcet Citrate Creamy Bites (30 Count)

Surprisingly, I love the lemon even though I'm a chocoholic.

Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
