Federal Employee Insurance and Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone out there has Federal Employee insurance (I have BC/BS Basic Option) and if they have had any luck getting them to pay for the plastic surgery to remove skin after WLS? Thanks!

Hi,

There are a few of us fepblue out here, I have not been banded yet, but my policy said absolutely not. BUT, I have heard if you have like huge issues from the skin - rashes or other medical issues etc they might do it. Your Dr. then has to say it is medically necessary. Have you called the 800 and asked? Most reps are pretty cool and will talk to you, not all, but most. Maybe some other will give you a better answer,,, but-good luck!

I don't have that type of insurance (I have HP) but from the research I have done, any rashes or skin irritations that are documented by a physician would make the removal of the extra abdominal skin a medical necessity and then they would pay for a panniculectomy. That is just the hanging skin. They do not cover the cost of a full Tummy Tuck (a.k.a. abdominoplasty) which tightens the muscles and deals with the upper abdomen.

Good luck,

Katie

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
