I failed my band and Dr recommended the sleeve.

Recommended Posts

I started at 321 and got down to 242.. big whoop.. I needed to be down to 165.. Started gaining and have gained back 40 pounds. My problem is not portion control.. it's sweets.. Ice cream is the big one for me. I have it daily and cannot stop. Even as I read the boards I just went into the kitchen to get some cookie dough.. How nice huh?? I am looking into overeaters anonymous. I went to my surgeon and he said that the Dr that put in my band totally recommended the wrong thing for me.. I should have gotten the bypass which is what I wanted in the first place. Now my original doctor is suggesting I take out the band (he will do it for free) and get the sleeve (which is $12000) as sweets with the sleeve are tough to handle.. But who has that kind of money laying around.. NOT ME!! I am dying to be thin... I'm miserable daily and don't know what to do..

Well if sweets are your problem, I can say that the sleeve won't fix that either. WLS surgery is just a tool. It can't control what you eat...only you can do that. Ice cream is a slider food and can basically get through anything. I suggest seeing a psychiatrist for your eating problems. Once you get that under control, then maybe you should start thinking about the sleeve. Just my opinion!

Well I am pre-op so this is just an opinion....

You lost 80lbs!!! congrats that is HUGE! I feel that you decided you already failed. I think that you can still use your band to loose but you need to put your part of the work in and keep up with your fills.

But if you really want to revise your lapband surgery...

I am most likely going to do the Lapband with plication. Which is sewing your stomach to mimic the sleeve with the lapband so its adjustable which should help with long-term plateau issues. Upon researching this procedure, I saw one surgeon say that it can easily be done on someone who already has the lapband. They could go into and perform plication on your stomach. Less invasive with similar results as the sleeve and less chance of slippage. Talk to you surgeon there are other alternatives. Good Luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
