What did you first eat?

Recommended Posts

I've got 8 more days of liquids on my post-op diet. I am dreaming of fettucine alfredo, fried chicken, pot pie, and anything else you can think of... My doctor's post op diet is just 21 days of liquids, then straight to solids. No mushies! I think I am going to do a few days of mushies anyway, just to get used to eating again. So, my question is, what was the first thing you ate and how much were you able to eat? Are you able to eat more after a while, or will I never be able to eat more than half a cup of food? I'm already missing food..starting the food grieving period, I guess. I'm already planning on eating Soups or mushies when I go out to avoid any stuck episodes in restaurants...but what can you eat and not eat? Can you eat Pasta? I am so excited to be able to eat in time for Thanksgiving! Including the pre-op diet, I will have been on 5 weeks of liquids.

i completely understand what you are feeling, we all do. it is like a mourning of the foods we can no longer eat. i was on liquids for one week, mushies for another week, then soft foods for another week, then onto solids. for my mushies, i ate alot of creamy Soups, mashed potatoes and gravy, soft foods i ate soft scrambled eggs with cheese, cottage cheese and yogurts. i still can eat Pasta, just not alot of it of course, and i eat small bites and chew it up well. i still love soups, i eat them all the time and they do fill me up. i even eat chinese and mexican food, i just make wiser choices now. the one thing i do miss is deep dish pizza, i can eat pizza if it is really thin crust.

Pasta depends on what type you are talking about. I can eat bow ties, and a small piece of lasana noodles, if crispy. I can't eat regular long spaghetti. I have tried, it will slip down, accidently, then I am in trouble. I stay away from most pasta, now. But, try it, you might be able to eat it without trouble. My son can! He can eat a lot of stuff I can't. So, folks and their bands are different, just like normal people! Goodluck. Karen

For some reason, the first thing I wanted to eat after I was cleared for solids was a grilled cheese sandwich! I ate almost half of it and didn't have a problem. As for Pasta, I don't have any trouble with it but I keep my portions very small because it tends to swell up in my pouch and cause some discomfort. I don't think there's anything I physically can't eat, but I stay away from things like rice and white potatoes. I've also found I don't like burgers anymore because there's always pieces of fat and gristle and I'm just not a fan.

Hey,

I remember when I got my band 2 yrs ago and I was on the liquids only for 4 weeks. Everytime I'd go to Albertsons to stock up on my Tomato Soup, I'd smell the fried chicken in the deli. Almost gave in a couple of times! The first few months were rough for me - as I had no restriction and I could eat as tho I didn't have the band. And I did. I had no self control. I thought the band wasn't gunna work for me. After 4 months and my 3rd fill, I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I could only eat about 6 bites of food. I can now eat anything I want, just really really small quantities of it. I've lost 104 lbs with about 9 lbs to goal. I still eat bread (I can only eat one pc now and really slowly), Pasta, rice, potatoes, and even occasionally pizza crust (only 1 pc - as more will get stuck). I'm thinking about getting another fill soon (I have about 8 cc in a 14 cc band). The moral of the story: Soon you'll be finding out what you can eat and what you might have to choose to not eat. I wish you all the luck and hope that you have resctriciton right away and you don't have to go thru bandster hell.

Marci

I ate scrambled eggs, and mushie food.

Remember to eat your Protein first, so that's for Thanksgiving too.

Pasta is one of those things I stay away from... bread, and rice is another.

You will find out what you can, and can not eat.

The first thing that I ate was a scrambled egg. I remember how excited I was just for an egg. When I was on liquids I kept dreaming and thinking of Milk Duds and Corn Nuts. Every night I would tell my husband how much I missed then and describe the salty and sweet combo. It was like porn I swear. But then once I could eat food again it went away and I can tell you I have probably eaten each of those (one there own) maybe twice. The urge for sweets and junk pasted for the most part. Halloween was a challenge but I walked away from the holiday eating three of four pieces of candy compared to my usual TWO POUNDS of candy so I consider it a great success.

Just know that know your mind is playing Jedi mind tricks on you. And lastly, I can still eat Pasta as long as I go slowly. I always eat my protien first and then a sample (1/2 cup or 1/4 cup of Pasta after) so I dont feel deprived because that is when I eat poorly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
