Mushies--how do you make them?

Recommended Posts

I am pre-op and trying to plan what I will need, and what food items sound best to me. So, how do you puree food for the mushy stage? I don't have a food processor and don't really want to buy one just for that, but will a blender or small grinder (like a coffee grinder) work for things like fruit, veggies or meat?

Thanks for any insights--this forum is a great source of information!

Jean, I use an immersion Blender by Braun. We've had it for years. It's perfect for making mushies

and mixing Protein Shakes. It works like a blender, but is really easy to clean. They're on ebay for $20.

Mushies were suppose to go through a straw, but I haven't seen that discussed in quite a while. I

still think it's not a bad idea, it gives your surgery time to heal. There are a bunch of good ideas

on this site, try Google, there are a lot of sites dedicated to WLS foods.

I use the Bullet....you can find them cheap at Target, Wal-Mart, costco, etc. You might want to invest in one so you can make Protein Shakes later too. They are good/healthy Meal Replacements when you aren't too terribly hungry. Good Luck!

Thanks!

I have a blender for the more liquid things, and so far I like all of the Protein shakes I have tried just shaken in a bottle. Does the immersion blender work for meats and veggies?

Maybe it was just sheer laziness, but I just ate mushies that were already in that state, i.e. hummus, soft cheeses, cream of wheat, etc. Every nutritionist recommends something different. As for the immersion blender, I think it's only good for things that have a liquid component to them...they're used to puree Soups right in the pot instead of transferring them to a regular blender.

I'm with Jenn on this one. I did not "make" any mushies. I just ate things that were already mushie. Cream of wheat, oatmeal, yogurt, chili, creamy soups ........ If they weren't quite mushie enough, I used my teeth to chew chew chew :D .

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
