liver shrinking diet

Recommended Posts

As most of the replies have stated the low carb diet does shrink the liver. It uses up the glycogen type molecules stored in the liver. I was told that if I did not follow the diet and when he got in there the liver was still enlarged the surgery would be off. The diet I was given was for 40 carbs per day, but since I was a male he wanted me to cut out carbs all together. That, for me, was near impossible. The day before the surgery I had Breakfast and then I decided to go on a liquid diet for the rest of the day. The actual surgery time was about half an hour. I could tell something was changed because the shape of my stomach changed. I too am confused at the different diets imposed by the surgeons. The variety of plans out there to match the variety of people makes sense, but the changes are per surgeon and not per patient. Going on a restricted diet is definitely a good idea, but this is the reason most of us chose the Lap-band. We don't have the will power to stick to a restricted diet. Remember, it is only two weeks and not the rest of your life. Plus I lost 10 lbs before surgery!

Hello everyone. My surgery is November 18th. I was put on a pre-op diet for 14 days and here is what I can have: steamed or raw vegetables at mealtime, Protein Drinks 3-4 times a day, sugar free Jello and popsicles, Decaf tea/coffee, and broth. I have to be honest, I have cheated. The broth doesn't settle well on my stomach and the Protein drinks are great for 2 times a day. My neighbor had the same surgery, same hospital, different doctor (there are 3 in the WLS Clinic) six months ago and she was given the diet as well, but he told her she could have a "true" meal here and there. I was shocked because there are two doctors in the same clinic saying different things! GO FIGURE!!

So true!

Funny story. I was banded almost three weeks ago and I was sooooo worried about my liver not shrinking enough. So worried that in fact, the first words after I woke up were, "How was my liver?" lol.

It was nice and shrunk :)

Any diet that causes you to lose weight will shrink your liver. Doesnt have to be liquids. Good luck to all!

This is good info. I too have noticed that most pple I speak to had different diets. I so have to do the 2 week pre-op but not solely liquid. Mine starts on the day before Thanksgiving. Glad I'm not a big holiday person.

Exactly. Which is why it's struck me as strange for some people to be on a pre-op diet that doesn't have a specific calorie limit.

I do think the point of making it a liquid or mostly liquid/high Protein diet is to prepare us for the weeks following surgery.

I was on a two week 1000 cal diet which I adhered to probably 95%, and the surgeon said my liver looked great. I still had coffee. I just tracked everything online to stay within about 1000 calories and 90g of Protein.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
