Vitamins- What are people taking?

Recommended Posts

I have researched and tried some of the samples of the Bariatric Vitamin formulas like Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate. They both offer specific formulations of the Vitamins for people with bands.

I have tried the samples specific for people with bands from Celebrate and so far the blackberry tasted pretty good but had an aftertaste, I have not yet tried the Cherry flavor but I am assuming they might have the same aftertaste. I tried the Calcet Creamy Bites which are the calcium citrate chews. The lemon was ok, but the chocolate fudge was so yummy!

From Bariatric Advantage, I have tried the grape flavor Multivitamin which was awesome!!, but it was not specific for people with bands, only for those with bypass and sleeves. I am waiting for some samples from them of the Vitaband. I have heard mixed reviews.

I am currently taking the One a Day Adult Gummy multivitamin pre-op and so far i have been very compliant with taking them because they taste so good.

I also take 1500 of Calcium citrate gummies by Caltrate however I might be switching to the Calcium Citrate chews by Bariatric Advantage, they offer chocolate, caramel, raspberry, and lemon flavor chews. Vitamin D tropical flavor liquid, tastes great!

I will add Thiamine post op

FYI: Important!! Most calcium chews that are chocolate are NOT calcium citrate. Those chews are actually calcium carbonate which is not recommended because it doesn't absorb well and it causes gas. Check the ingredients on the back of the bag, most will say calcium carbonate.

Calcium citrate absorbs and breaks down very quickly in your body which is why it is recommended so keep an eye out for this.

What does everyone else take?

i'm currently taking l'il critters Gummy vites Multi-Vitamin (yeah, it's for kids, but all i could find!). they taste JUST LIKE gummy bears with a slight twinge of flinstone. there's no aftertaste. however, once i'm done with these i'm planning to switch over to some of the vitafusion varieties, particularly the pre-natal, as i've read these can help with hair thinning issues. i also may try out a bottle of their Fiber gummies. Calcium is not a big concern for me because i get a lot from what i eat, but good to know about the calcium carbonate causing gas! i was planning on using Tums for additional calcium and heartburn, but i don't think i want to if they're going to cause gas...

I have heard great things about the Vitafusion. I think Target carries those. I may end up trying those when I finish this bottle. Fiber gummies is an idea. I did buy some Benefiber powder and some colace just in case. I normally always have been very regular but I have heard that once you are banded, the BM's are maybe every 3 days. I guess that would be something to get used to.

They told me not to use Tums either due to the carbonate. I have been using the Pepcid complete chewables for acid but those have calcium carbonate in those too. Having gas makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable. I don't have my book at the moment, but I can't remember what they did recommend for quick relief of heartburn/reflux. I will have to look and get back to you.

I just take the regular Centrum for women twice a day (separately) and the Viactiv Calcium supplements. They said I would have problems taking Vitamins that I can't chew, but I've had no problem. :) Goes down just fine!

The Viactiv is like a tootsie roll, so you gotta chew well, but it tastes great!

I'm using Isotonix http://www.marketamerica.com/brands-214/isotonix.htm. I take the Multi-Vitamin, the B, the D with k and OPC. I used the Bariatric Advantage multi Vitamin but couldn't take the after taste anymore. I've never been a good pill taker so I mix these in with my Water and I kill 2 birds with one stone. I get my Vitamins and I can count it towards my daily water goal.

I take all costco Vitamins. I have the Centrum chewables, and CaCitrate chewables on hand for the surgery. I asked the dietician about costco vit and she said they were fine after a couple of months. I take a multivit, a B-100, vit B-12, vit D, 500-1000mg of vit c and am just finishing a bottle of CaCaltrate, The main reason I take B-12 is for neuropathy in my feet. I will get a bottle of the sublingual today. Hopefully I can escape having to take Iron as it does a number on my stomach.

The online stuff is just too expensive for me and I was glad to hear that I will be able to use the costco ones eventually.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
