Can you have a stuck episode without a fill?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 1/2 weeks banded. I was advanced to solids last wednesday. I've been doing well, eating small amounts and all that. Well today my husband and I had a 2 hour drive to a memorial service. So I got a veggie flatbread sandwich from dunkin donuts. I ate it slowly and it seemed to settle ok. But about an hour later, the pain in my shoulder came back. It's been gone for almost two weeks. And I felt like my band was tight. Was this a stuck or sort of stuck episode? When we got to the memorial, I walked around for a bit, ate minimally and finally felt better, but it took hours. I was thinking that maybe it was because I sat in the car after eating and couldn't move around. Any thiughts? Advice? It kind of bummed me out coz I thought I was doing really well. My first fill is the 11 th. Thanks !

I don't think you were stuck I think you were probably overfull. It doesn't sound like a good choice of food and eating squashed up in the car can also cause problems.

Sounds like you ate too much. Its my understanding when you are stuck you slime and pb. I think i got stuck on a carrot. Lots of sliming and when i stood up and walked for a few minutes i felt a little better. No pbing for me tho.

That makes sense. It didn't feel like too much at the time, but I'm still getting used to eating solid food I used to eat those for Breakfast because it was made of egg whites, veggies , one slice cheese on a round flatbread. But, I'm banded now and everything is different. Thanks for your reply. Those are off my list !

In a peculiar kind of way, it is very nice. It is quite a learning curve. Now I know that veggie flat breads are too much for my band. And I am down 23 lbs this morning! 12 lbs since surgery almost a month ago! Woohoo!

I can do anything carb related. I don't think I will ever have bread again. Right now I can't even eat crackers. It has been 9 months and I don't crave them either :).

I have trouble eating anything bread related too so i dont and if i eat cheese its 1 teaspoon of grated parmesan, which satisfies me on the cheese need as its a strong flavour. If you go on a long journey take your food with you, take Snacks with you, that way you dont have to rely on whats available roadside :)

Could have developed air causing gas, at least that's what it sounds like to me. You will know when you get stuck, believe me!! When you're stuck, it feels like someone has their fingers on your through trying to choke you, its a lot of pressure in your throat and chest. Throwing up isn't what you're used too, it's more like foam. It's really your saliva because it has no where to go but up.

It's true, eating is a new journey from how it used to be. I have had a couple of experiences where something I would have eaten in the past is just totally not okay for me to eat now. It's a little unnerving, but it's all part of learning our band and getting used to it. It looks like you're doing really well! Congrats on your loss thus far!

While to me, it doesn't sound like you were "stuck", yes you can have a stuck episode with an empty band. I just recently had my first fill. About 2 weeks ago, while the band was empty I took a bite of something that I knew I probably shouldn't. I knew almost immediately that I had a problem; it didn't take an hour. It was a very unpleasant experience and I will be doing my best to avoid it in the future.. haha.. I have been pretty luck so far. That was the only thing that I have had issues with and I have tried all kinds of food. I know this may change as I get more fills.

Good luck to you..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
