Do I have to drink protein shakes?

Recommended Posts

I did the unflavored Protein powder with sugar free green tea with a splash of OJ.. it is really good... I just celebrated my 1yr anniversary~ I think I'm going to jump start my weight loss with liquids for 1 wk.... I've gotten kinda slack the past few months.... I haven't lost any weight in a while, but I haven't gained any either!!.. last fill was in april... I don't feel like I need another fill, I just need to eat the right things... Good luck....the liquid Protein period was the worst!!

The Premier Protein chocolate at costco taste like chocolate milk and are ready to drink. They have 30 grams of prot in 11 oz and only like 160 cals and 1 or 2 gr of sugar. I know what u mean about the smell, these don't do that to me. Good luck. And I am a year and half out and my band is so tight I have to drink a shake for Breakfast cause I can't eat then. So the ones saying u shouldn't drink them later are not completely correct. My dr says it is perfectly fine and almost all her band patients only tolerate liquid breakfasts. I have been below goal since april and I am not starving or anything.

OK seriously, I can't find any I like. I have the unjury and the taste is great, but the smell is horrible. I am EXTREMELY sensitive to smells. Like seriously, I should be studied. It's that bad. Smell determines EVERYTHING for me, even my mood. I know I am weird. All of these Protein shakes have that Protein smell or whatever it is and I can't stand it. The smell makes me nauseous. I almost threw up earlier, not because I was drinking too fast or had the wrong thing, but because of the smell. I am still nauseous from it. Honestly, if this is how this is going to be, I have to find an alternative to these Protein Shakes. I understand the importance of protein, but is there any way around this? Ive spent a lot of money trying different kinds and can't find anything. I even spent $70 on unflavored so I could put it in food. I can still smell it!!!

Help!!!!

I totally have your sense of smell.. MUSCLE MILK in the powder form -chocolate...mixed with 8 ozs of 1% milk. It is not at all like the premixs it is sooo much better. A friend turned me onto it this past weekend. Loved it.

I don't care to much for their chocolate.. Unless they finally improved it !

But, The chocolate Milk tastes just like the real thing.

and the Muscle Milk Light is good for you. 1/2 the calories, same Great Taste, and High in Protein. That is in Powder.;)

I think the easiest way to avoid the smell is once you get to the part of post-op where you can eat regular food you can just get it through your food instead of having to supplement with shakes. There are plenty of foods out there that are high in Protein and low fat. I have been liking hardboiled eggs and chicken salad lately, lol. Another thing I have been liking lately is PB2. It is powdered Peanut Butter that you mix 1 tbsp of to 2 tbsp Water and it has the exact consistency of peanut butter but only 45 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 5 grams of protein. Not a huge amount of protein but a good amount for a snack. Good luck!

Isopure zero carb RTD bottles are pretty good, and you don't have to spend a ton of money to find out if you will like them or not. They are very fruity and taste great, no Protein smell, 40grams of Protein per 20z bottle. Check out GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc for the singles to give them a go. They can get expensive, bought a mixed case of 12 for 50 shipped from GNC. Myoplex Carb Advantage dark chocolate doesn't have any smell and tastes good, you can get them at Walmart, target, etc. I'm going to try the Isopure Zero Carb powders in the near future, reviews on the fruity flavors have been quite postive with the biggest drawback being a kool-aid sweet taste, I've got no issues with that for 50g protein per serving lol.

I don't drink any Protein Shakes at all. If I want something like that, I'll make my own with oats, almonds, frozen berries, yoghurt, fruit, an egg, etc in it. It has heaps of Protein, but doesn't taste like crap the way that all the processed powders do!

What stage are you at? Once you are past the initial postop stage there is no reason to drink Protein shakes at all, you DON"T NEED THEM. It is perfectly easy to get enough Protein from a normal healthy diet and if you really want some extra protein that goes down easily have a glass of milk or some yogurt.

If you are still preop it is a little bit harder as most Dr's make you use them for the preop diet. If you are at that stage ask your Dr if there are any alternatives to shakes that they are happy for you to have.

I was good with the shakes preop but now 4 days post op I cant stand them everything tastes bland. I keep experimenting to see what suits now. Was also drinking alot of diet tea pre op but today it tastes nasty, I think my taste buds have changed.

I also buy the Premier Proteins at Cocso...I like the vanilla. I think a lidded cup (even better with a straw) is a great idea but I think I have a better one: I had a job that involved a horrible stench (think CSI) and I used to put a tiny bit of Vicks vapor rub or the oil from an orange peel up my nose...it worked!

I am just now to almost a normal diet. I still have to eat really moist meats. I still can't get in 60 grams a day. I am LUCKY at 40, but like your said, my nutrionist actually told me a few days ago that they would rather me get the protein from real food, but it's so hard!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
