Newbie from Illinois

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I have been a lurker here for several weeks, just reading and learning! I am from Bonfield IL, about 65 miles south of Chicago. I started researching Lap Band a couple of years ago, started the process to get insurance approval last year, then found out that my insurance at the time would not cover WLS under any circumstance! This year, my company changed hands and we got new insurance in July, so I started over again, and this time it looks like it will go through! I am really excited, and only slightly apprehensive about becoming a bandster!

All of my pre-tests and various visits--nutritionist, psych, PCP, etc. will be done by the end of this week, and the surgeon said we will try for Dec. 16 as my surgery date. I am SO ready for this!

I have read so many people's experiences on this board, and on ObesityHelp.com, I feel like I am prepared for almost any contingency--good or bad (but hopefully all good, of course!)

I have followed the advice of several people here, and have tried various Protein Shakes, etc. I have just ordered a variety pack of Unjury powders to decide which ones I might buy. I have even tried doing the pre-op diet of 2 shakes and 4oz of lean meat per day, just to make sure I can do it.

Thanls for reading so far! Does anyone have suggestions for Clear Liquids besides sugar-free Jello, popsicles and broth? Also what kind of broth is best?

Thanks again!

~Jean

Hi Jean, I'm originally from Naperville. Our web site is screwed up today so bear with us. You mentioned a web site that is a<br />"Site that must not be mentioned" here : > ). To answer your question about liquids, I like Costco's Muscle Milk protien powder<br />mixed with skim milk and their chicken Boullon powder as a hot drink. I put some Protein isolate powder in it for extra protein.<br />You can get protein isolate (pure protein) powder on line, or in most health food stores. It has to be mixed in a little cold water<br />before you add it to anything hot or it'll clump up. Good luck with everything and come back often to let us know how you're<br />doing.

OOPS!

Sorry about the "unmentionable!"

If you add Protein isolate powder to broth, is it still considered a "clear liquid"?

Yes, and it gives you additional Protein to prevent muscle loss.

Thanks! That will help, I think if I can add some unflavored Protein to broth, Chrystal Light, and other clear fluids I won't be so hungry post-op! My nutritionist only said things like sugar-free Jello, popsicles, etc. and I thought it might be pretty rough!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
