Living Will Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

The nurse I am working with through United Healthcare suggested that I prepare a living will before surgery incase anything goes wrong, my husband can make any medical decisions necessary. Has anyone prepared one before surgery? If so, did you find a website that you used as a template, or did you see a lawyer? My surgery is 2 weeks away so this is something I am going to need to do very soon. Thank you for your help!

If a living will gives you peace of mind, why not. I'm sure you know the odds of a fatality in band surgery

are about like winning the lottery, it just doesn't happen (assuming you choose a competent hospital

and surgeon). This is a very safe surgery with very few complications.

I agree...and I did make sure I am having my surgery at a Center of Excelence...but the nurse had me so freaked out, I just wanted to get some opinions. What was your recovery time like after surgery?

Do you have any friends who work at a hospital? If so ask them to bring you a LW from the hospital. You will need two witnesses and a notary(in Texas) and that should take care of it! Good luck and so you know without the LW your next of kin would legally make your decisions anyway :) I work in a ICU in Houston Texas...Suegery on thursday back to work monday!

Yes, I did make a living will, I found a template, and tweaked it some. I did not make a new one when I had my latest surgery for a revision, but the hospital asked if I had one. You do what makes you feel comfortable, but remember, this is major surgery, and they put you all the way under with life support. Good luck, Karen

I updated my medical directives and my will before surgery. I did not want any headaches for my wife in case something happened during surgery or immediately afterwards. Peace of mind on my part and of course I'm still here :). It's good to have those documents in order when you have a family.

I had a very boring recovery, no pain, no gas, walked two miles the next day. Couldn't have been better

and I attrubute it to going to a Center of Excellence. I know I say this a lot, but I believe it is a certain

way to a successful WLS surgery.

Thank you to everyone for your replies :-) I appreciate the feedback and information.

JustDoIt130...I am seeing Dr. Bruce at Bariatric Specialist of NC. He is fantastic, just had my what I thought was pre-op today, but it was my results visit. I have my Pre-op at Rex on11/14, then surgery on 11/17.

You can Google Living Will. It is a simple one page document that states your desire as far as life support s/anything go wrong and it names a executor of your wishes. It needs to be signed by 2 witnesses. In NYC it did not need to be notorized. I almost did not do it, but I did it at the last moment and brought it with me to the hospital because I realized I did not want to burden my husband s/anything go wrong.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
