NicoleMP 4 Posted November 3, 2011 Hi All, My surgery is scheduled for this Monday and I have failed at the pre-op diet. I have consumed all of the Protein in the world but instead of eating the one a day Smart one meals I have been eating things I wasn't supposed to, such as Asian style chicken and Broccoli with Rice, pizza and creamy Soups . I know it sounds horrible but I honestly haven't been overeating I just haven't been eating right. Should I cancel my surgery or is there a chance I can still shrink my liver? If so, I will have 3 days to do it. Please help! -N

Dibley Dawn 84 Posted November 3, 2011 were you supposed to be on the liquid only pre-op diet? if so, i would say cancel the surgery until you are ready to do it the right way. i can see slipping once or twice on the pre-op, but it sounds like you just gave up completely and just ate whatever you wanted to eat. That's not a good sign that you are ready for this change. Call your doctor and be honest and see what they suggest. 1 I-wanna-be-a-loser reacted to this
BayougirlMrsS 3,934 Posted November 3, 2011 I would not cancel.... you have three days and that is good enough.... Just be very strict for the next three days. You can do it. some dr. don't require a diet at all.... most do though. good luck
waynef 25 Posted November 3, 2011 I wouldn't postpone it, but he will know if you followed it or not. My dr said he actually had 1 guy that he didnt band because he didint follow the diet.
NicoleMP 4 Posted November 3, 2011 Thanks for your reponses! I was supposed to drink 2-3 Protein Shakes a day (which I did) plus a smart one with a side salad. I had some really good days where I followed it 100% but then had those days where I replaced the meal with "bad foods". I don't know I am so torn! I knwo if I call my surgeon he will be upset and cancel it but if it is the best thing for me Healthwise then i guess I should call him. Has anyone not followed the diet and stil had a successful surgery?
Dibley Dawn 84 Posted November 3, 2011 that's why, as i said in your other thread, i think you should call your doctor now and tell him. it would be terrible if he cut you open and saw that your liver wasn't small enough and decided not to band you. just give him a call and be honest. if he will still do the surgery, then you are golden...but you should do this last 3 days as strictly as you can, otherwise, you should postpone until you are mentally ready for this. Dibley Dawn 84 Posted November 3, 2011 it really depends on how strict your doctor is. my doctor told me that if i did not follow the pre-op and he cut me open and saw that my liver hadn't shrunken, he would not do the surgery. better safe than sorry, and better to call him up and be honest and maybe push the surgery off for a couple of weeks rather than a couple of months because you have to heal from the incisions from an incomplete surgery. again, it just depends on what your doctor is looking for. elcee 3,341 Posted November 3, 2011 The question is :- if you couldn't stick to the preop diet how will you manage to stick to the postop diet? If you decide postop that it is just too hard or that you will substitute something you run the risk of doing a lot of damage. I would be more worried that you are not ready and committed to make the change that the surgery requires than I would be about the liver. You have to realise that the band is a tool that works when you work with it. I would take a good hard deep look at myself and work out what I wanted and if I was in fact ready. 1 I-wanna-be-a-loser reacted to this
lorena st 33 Posted November 3, 2011 I agree with all the other posters but have something else to add. My doctor had another patient who did not follow the diet, but didn't tell him. Her surgery was the day after mine and she was 4 hours in surgery instead of 1 hour (like me). Her liver had not shrunk and they almost abandoned the surgery after they started. They carried on and finished it, but she did have some post-surgical complications from the anesthetic. Had they abandoned the surgery, she would have had to pay again, to have the surgery re-sheduled (this would have cost an additional $16,000 to $17,000 dollars in Canada). Are you prepared for those risks? Be honest and upfront with your surgeon. He wants you to have a successful surgery, as much as you do. He may still go ahead with the surgery, but he needs to know what you have been up to.

Matt Z 4,139 Posted November 5, 2011 Any updates? I'm curious because I'm getting banded on the 18th and I have no other pre-op diet info except taking a bunch of myralax and what not the day before. I'm curious what your doc said when you told him/her that you have slipped up and continued to not follow. Not everyone can adhere 100%, but that's ok. What's NOT ok is when you just give up. You need to either take yourself out of the situation causing you to cheat, or focus on why you want the surgery in the first place. Is pizza more important than the reasons you want the surgery? I know it can be hard, but if you can't "see the big picture" and commit to the pre-op diet, you are really going to face some major issues when that pizza doesn't just make you feel bad, it'll hurt like crazy and might land you in the ER. You need to be 110% honest with your docs, your psyc, your nutritionists. People do die from complications from this surgery.
Angela the Breeder 1 Posted November 5, 2011 Hi N - I have surgery in three weeks and my surgeon didn't change my diet at all. B-52 7,113 Posted November 5, 2011 I was instructed that I MUST loose 20 lbs before the surgery. Did not matter what I ate, as long as I dropped the 20. (shakes work the best though) I was banded on a Monday. I had my final appointment with the surgeon the Friday before where I was "Weighed In" It was THEN I was told whether I was able to have the surgery or not. NOT when I was already in the OR. Incidentally, after the final weigh in on Friday, I went and had my "Final Meal" (pig out) on Saturday, then did not eat a single thing all day Sunday for the Monday am surgery.
