Trip To The ER

Recommended Posts

I have been having alot of problems with my bowels and Constipation for the past four weeks. I spoke to my surgeon, dietician and regular doctor and they all said the same thing. Up the Water intake, increase the Benefiber and get your exercise. I did all of those things and still continued to have problems. Yesterday I was in such intense pain that my hubby took me to the ER. Lab work, xrays, and a visual exam by the ER doc revealed nothing. My lap band surgeon was called it, he confirmed what I already knew....I am full of crap...literally. My lap band is fine and doing what it should be. Needless to say I am on a regime of ducolax, milk of mag and benefiber to get me going. I asked doc if there is anything I can do different to prevent this from happening again and he said no. Some people are just more likely to have this problem, when loosing weight and dieting. I just wanted to let you all know, so if you start feeling constipated or are having problems with your bowels....get it treated ASAP and don't wait too long.

They didn't do an enema or suggest glycerine suppositories. I thought the ones that go into the other end work quicker.

I'm sorry you are all backed up.:sick

They said they could do a suppository if I wanted. I told them I would try this route and if I am not seeing the results I need in 12 hours I will do a suppository. An enema was never mentioned or suggested. :)

My child has bowel issues and and enema was key:kiss. The doctors told me try the by mouth stuff but it was too late. Everything she took she would throw it up so we had to take the other route and the enema would work.

It doesn't hurt maybe your ego a little but when you are empacted you are misable :(so just get it over with. Good Luck

I am glad you are ok. But I gotta say that if I was in your position, and we had found out it was just being backed up, my DH would have totally started in with the jokes. And all I can hear are his comments in my head.

Smile, be glad you caught it before it became dangerous, and take the enema if it gets bad. Besides...you can look at it as a fat flush and feel like californian high society. LOL

So glad to hear your not full of "CRAP" any more and that every thing has "WORKED OUT" okay!!!! :clap2:

No really it could be a very big issue and one to deffinatly be concerned about...so you did the right thing going to the ER.

Has no one ever suggested you take "Colace" - a stool softener? I took a couple the night before surgey and never had the typical post-surgery problems.

Things went well til suddenly, a few months out, I found myself mysteriously constipated. It was DARK, too. Looked closely at the bottle of Centrum I had opened the day before, and it wasn't the Centrum Silver (which doesn't contain constipating iron). However, one or two Colace a day is keeping me fine.

You really might want to try calling a local Nutrition store and talk to a manager or owner and ask them about a colon cleansing product. I am hyper picky about keeping things moving because as a wise person once told me," If it ain't coming out, it ain't coming off". I also would ask about pro-biotics.

The product I use is called Herbal Cleanse and Probiotic Restore from www.advocare.com. It has a 100% unconditional satisfaction guarantee. It really does work. This product has to be ordered either thru the website or a distributor.

Bran cereal & a little reg coffee always help me each morn. I too had the same problem after surgery. But enemas/stool softeners were my friends. So happy your feeling better, its so uncomfortable to be that way.

Nothing makes me regular. I've used Benefiber in my coffee for months and I still have to use a Ducolax to "go", and I have to take at least two and it takes two days for it to work, no over night action for me. This has always been a problem for me, so I can't blame it on the band....so I know what it feels like to be full of chit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
