Will it matter if I did not lose it all?

Recommended Posts

I have been pre-op for 1 whole year, trying to lose 5% before they even let me meet with the surgeon.

So Tomorrow is the appointment, and I did not get there. What do you think will happen? I am so nervous. There is not much I can do about it now, is there?

Did you get close? I would think if you lost some, they would see that you tried. I don't get the mandatory weight loss that some doctors require. I am not talking about the pre-op stuff, just the stuff to see if you will lose. If you could do it on your own, you wouldn't be getting lap band in the first place.

Is the 5% requirement from the doctor or your insurance?

Hopefully what happened is that your doctor and your doctor's staff were supportive of you and sat down and worked with you to find out why you didn't get there. Did you keep a food diary? If not, keep one for a few weeks and then see your doctor's nutritionist to make sure you are eating correctly. Write down on it when and if you exercise, what you do and for how long. It's a pain to do but your doctor can't help you unless he or she knows what you are doing. Patterns will show up by keeping a diary or journal and they will be able to pinpoint it. Your bariatric surgeon and support staff are there to help you. They work for YOU. Losing weight is hard work even with the band. You have to use every tool available to you. They should be able to get you back on track if you're not happy with where you are weight wise.

My dr requires me to lose 5% before surgery.. I haven't lost much during my 6 month workup. I've completed all my workup, just waiting on insurance now. If I get approved by insurance, my surgeon told me that I'll have to do a 2 week liquid diet to lose as much as I can and to shrink my liver.. 5% for me is 13lbs. They told me at the beginning, if I lose 5% during the nutritional part then I wouldn't have to do a liquid diet.. Now I'm regretting not trying harder..

How much do you need to lose? 1 years seems like a very long time! I only had to lose 5 pounds before they would do the surgery

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
