Did you gain weight after starting exercise?

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question. I started exercising a few days ago. My legs and such are really sore (so I assume I'm gaining a bit of muscle) and I feel good about it. Problem is, I have no been eating any differently than I was when I was losing weight and all of a sudden I gained like two pounds. Is this normal? Did any of y'all gain weight when starting exercise?

Thank you very much!

Elizabeth

It is normal to retain water/gain weight when first starting to work out. Give it a week and your body will catch up and start losing again. :) Make sure you are getting 8-10 cups of Water in to replenish what your sweating out. Water will help a ton!

Those sore muscles are retaining Water. It'll go away soon and the exercise will help your weight loss - but you're unlikely to ever see a huge drop in weight simply because of exercise, its consistency and doing it with good food intake that just keeps weight dropping slowly and steadily over a long period of time.

I had the same problem and got discouraged, but the weight started to drop off after a little while. Like everyone said, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

When I started hitting it hard and consistently, my weight loss did plateau for a while.

However, even though I was not loosing, I noticed I was still dropping in clothes sizes.

So my body shape, etc, must have been changing (muscle tone).

You're gaining muscle. A more accurate way to identify your fat loss journey is to have the gym you're at measure your body fat percentage. Most gyms do this for free. Just check on it every week or two and if you notice your body fat percentage going down but your weight going up it simply means youre gaining muscle and losing fat which is a great thing!

Thank you all very much!

I've started to slowly lose (yay!) again, so I think I'm going to be okay. Gonna head out to the gym now, actually! :) One benefit of college: free gym membership!

Thanks again,

Elizabeth

Gosh this is me! Between the Dr's office troubles I am having and not losing weight, its all driving me crazy! I have been exercising for a month and so far nothing!! I've cut out all sodas (even diet sodas), been doing the pre-op diet (for the past 2 weeks. However, I haven't lost anything. I need to lose 15-20 pounds before I am allowed to have the surgery (due to BMI too high by their policy).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
