Excercise Induced Asthma

Recommended Posts

Since losing all this weight, (and being a cardiac patient) I have been hitting the gym and pushing cardio workouts quite hard. (with the blessing of all my Dr.'s)

I wear a BPM strap and have the Cardio Coach workouts on my I-Pod.

However, whenever I get to a upper level 3, lower level 4, I hit a wall.

I get a burning sensation in my lungs, sometimes so bad I feel like I'm going to die if I continue. It has forced me to slow down, and sometimes even stop.

I have always thought it was a side effect of being out of shape all these years, not to mention my age.

Then I did some google searching and found something people referred to "Exercise Induced Asthma"

I was at my PCP this morning and mentioned to him what I was experiencing and what I found on the internet.

He told me it was very common, has nothing to do with you having any pulmonary issues, or any medical issues at all, and that he experiences it from time to time when running marathons.

Said it is really no big deal. I told him it was holding me back and limiting me from progressing further.

He gave me an Rx for a inhaler, told me to inhale 2 puffs 15-20 minutes before running. Which I did this afternoon.

It was night and day!!! How long has this held me back?? I had the best workout ever today.

Put me to a whole new level! And I know it will only get better from here.

No. I do not have asthma.

My pulmonary eval/testing was excellent!

It is asthma like symptoms people get when working out / running in aerobic conditions.

Especially happens when cold, but can happen to anyone at anytime when doing aerobic workouts such as running, etc.

I have asthma and it always gave me a roadblock when exercising. I would always use the inhaler once I had symptoms until my Dr told me to do the same thing. It is absolutely night and day. I used to have to stop midway thru Zumba and thought I had a truck on my chest. Now, I take 2 puffs before and can do the whole hour fine.

It's such a difference. For those with it and those with the induced "like" symptoms.

Great post!

A review of exercise-induced asthma is presented which describes work that has been carried out by the authors and by other investigators over recent years. The effect of exercise on lung function in asthmatic and normal subjects is compared. The influence of the type and severity of exercise on the response of the asthmatic is noted and the importance this has for interpretation of results. The effects of various drugs on exercise-induced asthma are considered in some detail. The clinical implications of the results of exercise tests in asthmatics, their relatives, and other subjects are considered in terms of the diagnosis and prognosis of asthma and its mode of inheritance. It is concluded that there is as yet no explanation for the mechanism of exercise-induced asthma, but it is a tool of potentially great value for research into the physiology and treatment of clinical asthma.

It is currently thought that the inflammatory response that is natural in the healing for cuts, bruises or wounds, is the same biological cascade that you are experiencing. Since you do have exercise induced asthma, it's just the name that stuck and not asthma, you should be careful when excercising in cold, dry, high pollen or windy days. You have done the most important step and got a pulmonary function study done. Since your inhaler works you are in luck. For a more effective method of using the inhaler get a spacer from your doctor or pharmacy store. If you are like me, frugal or cheap, use a toilet paper tube instead. This allows the mist to make the turn down your throat instead of hitting the back of your throat. Just put the inhaler on one end of the tube and the other end around your mouth. Start inhaling and hit the button. Slow deep breath. Hold for a count of 10 and exhale. Wait 60 seconds and repeat.

I've had exercise induced asthma all of my life....In grade school I always had to see the nurse before gym class so that I could use my inhaler first. My asthma got much worse over the years though since I gained all of this weight. I would wake up needing my inhaler. Its gotten a little better but, I most definitely have to use my inhaler before every work out because if I don't, I wind up needing it midway through and I don't do as good...so I know exactly how you feel!

Everyone can experience exercise induced asthma, but look at the bright side, it means you are really working hard, thats why cardio coach is so good. Have you tried mytreadmill trainer? Music's not as good but the workouts themselves are great and it gives a bit more variety to add into the mix.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
