It's difficult for me to discuss personal subjects like this but I need advice and help.

I keep suffering from frequent (almost constant) Constipation that's not easily resolved by Collace or other OTC laxatives or stool softners. Not fun and very painful.

Otherwise all OK - losing weight and eating OK with care.

Any insights?

Although it sounds simplistic, try drinking at least 64 oz of Water a day. Give it a couple days.

If that doesn't work my nutritionist suggested warm prune juice with bran flakes. We were told

to avoid commercial laxatives for at least 6 weeks. Good luck.

Colace and other stools softeners are not going to do a thing for Constipation. They don't make you go, they just make it easier when you do. Lots of Water and some warm prune juice will help in time. When my patients are constipated, I give them 2 Tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia followed by a minimum of 8 ounces of water (12 is better). They usually go within 30 minutes! I see that you are 68 years old. If you are on any meds it's entirely possible that one or more of them are causing your problem. Discuss it with your doctor.

what about adding benefiber? Tasteless non gritting and you wouldn't even know its in your juice, Water, milk, coffee etc., They even make splenda that has it in there.

I can relate. I am one week post surgery and was in a lot of pain. I went to my physician today and had to have the impacted stool removed manually (this is as bad as it sounds! but I feel so much better now). At this point I am having 1 teaspoon of benefiber in water/juice/milk after each meal. Hopefully this resolves the issue and does not allow it to get to the severely impacted stage again. Please see your doctor and see what he/she recommends, especially if this is a long term and/or recurring issue.

Hi Rob,

This is a problem that I had (still can have) since I was banded June '10. I tried Fiber pills and stool softeners to no avail...... I will tell you the things I have found work the best for me... prune juice works for sure (a little thick to drink though).. I also use benefiber, 2 tsp in each cup of coffee in the morning.. I have also found that an Acai berry cleanse works well

Hope things resolve themselves soon - but the Benefiber does the trick to keep things moving along

Roy....

Extremely happy that you posted this topic. Thank everyone that reply to his question. I have noticed that I am getting Constipation as well. I will try the milk of magnesia and see if this works. How often are some of you taking it? And do you think constipation affect your weight?

I have been taking Super Cleanse made by Natures Secret I buy it online from the The Vitiam Shoppe and when you find how much you need you will go 3 times a day and when you go it is normal, no running to the bathroom or pains or gas you just go. You might need to cut the pills in half I do but no problem. I take 3 a day everyday. I love it You can buy it at the store too but it is so much cheaper online.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
