What are clear liquids?

Recommended Posts

I know dumb question right? Well I thought I knew what they were until my nutritionist mentioned things like tea and Jello in the list. I don't get what Clear Liquids are. She said I would be on it for 4 days. Does she mean anything liquid? I am ask for sure Friday after my surgery, but just curious now.

I guess it's kinda common sense but this was a little confusing to me too. But right after my surgery, before I went home, I asked the post-op nurse what "clear liquids" meant exactly. She said "any liquid you can see through" she said, Water, Jello, sugar free ice pops, chicken broth/stock (low sodium low fat is pretty see through) and sports drinks like gatorade (I love the low calorie ones, I lived on them my first month post-op, I still drink them during work outs and after fills). No thick fluids like creamy soups/protein shakes or anything you can't see through, like coffee or milk I would assume.

Clear liquids are basically anything you could possibly see through. Here's a list from mayo Clinic

Plain water
Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple juice, grape juice or cranberry juice
Strained lemonade or fruit punch
Clear, fat-free broth (bouillon or consomme)
Clear sodas
Plain gelatin
Honey
Ice pops without bits of fruit or fruit pulp
Tea or coffee without milk or cream

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A. Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
