To gym or not to gym?

Recommended Posts

I don't remember how I did it anymore, my surgery was four years ago. There is a file in the archives section that describes exactly how to do it. Just search the topic and it walks you through it. I'm not very computer savvyy and I was able to do it.

BTW, look at my ticker - I am FINALLY in the 150's!!!!! It definitely was the Zumba....and the Cardio Kickboxing....and the Boot Camp... and the Power Lifting....... and (sadly) the nutritionist!

Good luck at the gym. Just go and do things at your own pace. Also, don't get intimidated by challenging classes. I was miserable in my first few classes, I kind of hid out in the back and just suffered through it. Now I am really able to do it, and it's so much fun to keep up and feel your body moving the way it is supposed to!

I have been debating for a while now about whether or not to join a gym. I have belonged to several gyms in the past and was never able to stick with it, so it was always a waste of money. Is a gym really the be all end all of exercise, or can I still lose weight without it? Now that winter is coming I won't be able to do my walks outside, although I do have a few exercise videos and some dumbbells for strength training. What do you think? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

I dislike running,I dislike the gym, but I love the results. Right after my surgery I was walking 5 miles/3-4 days week. To Celebrate my 60th birthday i ran the 5 miles that day! I joined the gym 9 months a go,& was becoming a gym rat going 3-4 days a week. Now I go to the gym 2 days a week& run 1 day a week. I have to tell you that people are unbelieving when I tell them I was 105 lbs heavier last year & I'm 60.

WOW - you lost 105 lbs in a year????? That's awesome! I'm so impressed. It has taken me four years to lose 55 lbs, but I had a baby in the middle and gained most of my weight back. Still, 105 in a year, you must have had a lot of focus and committment for this. Aside from the gym, did you do anything else?

95 lbs the first year,it has become harder the last 6 months because I'm close to goal. Did I do anything else... I'm a RN working 12 hrs shift/3 days a week! When I'm at work, I'm to stressed to eat! ... LOL. By the way I work on a surgical unit & involved with lapband patients. I also was a Labor& Delivery nurse.

I have been going to the gym but I want to try Zumba. It has just opened in my area a couple of weeks ago and I want to try it so bad. I think it would really help me out. I don't know what the class entails but it is only like $5.00 for a session.

I LOVE Zumba. I do it appx. 3 times a week. It's meant to be a party style Latin/Hip Hop class where you are doing a lot of party/club type dancing. It's so much fun! I am not much of a dancer (think Elaine on Seinfeld) but once I got over my self-conciousness, I found I really enjoyed it. It helps to have a fun, nice, encouraging instructor, not one of these skinny gorgeous girls who thinks she's all that. Well, the instructor I love actually is a skinny pretty girl who thinks she's all that, but she is also really nice and encouraging, and looking at her figure is major workout inspiration. And my dancing is actually improving, something I never thought would happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
