Is the fill process painful?

Recommended Posts

I have looked everywhere and can't find any information on the fill process. Does it hurt to be filled? Do they give you a shot for pain? I have my first fill on Tuesday and am a little nervous.

Thanks!

Not really. You're usually given a small shot to deaden the port area, then

the saline is injected with a larger needle, which you hardly feel (depends

on how much of a woose you are).

No, it doesn't hurt. I do not get a pain shot first. It is a pinch and then it is over, not a big deal. Try not to stress out about it, you will be fine!!! Good luck!!!!

The first fill really doesn't hurt at all. it feels like getting a shot. You feel a little pinch, and you may feel a little sore but it goes away. You don't need pain medication. You'll be fine

I find it painless. My Dr doesn't use any numbing either. Takes less than a minute and you're good to go!

honestly, the flu shot is worse.

My doc numbs the area with a spray, it generally doesn't hurt, it's just a pinchy feeling. Although my doctor had a hard time finding my port the first time due to scar tissue, it hurt, I won't lie, but it was nothing I couldn't handle. It took 3 painful tries that first time which made me not want a second fill, but since then it's been easy breezy and not painful at all.

You bet. It's the scariest and most painful thing ever !! I break out in cold sweats just thinking about it, and I can't drive home afterwards. tongue.gif

Just kidding. It's really nothing at all. My Dr. does not need to use any deadening around the port.

I work in healthcare. So while I'm laying on my back, I prop myself up on my elbows and carry on a normal conversation with him on just about anything while I am watching and learning.

I especially liked it one time when he had to take an important phone call and left me there with the needle sticking out of me like a pin cushion.

He uses a gas tight syringe with a valve so he can close the valve and remove the syringe leaving the air tight needle behind.

I'm going to be honest, I don't no if painful is the right word cause it really don't hurt, but the thought of sticking a needle in my stomach makes me nauses (spellcheck) and I am being honest. my Dr. feels around my insision (spellcheck) then when she locates the port she sticks the needle in....I'm a mess everytime I go. The first time I went my pressure was so high, and I don't have high blood pressure....but each time it gets better...I hope I don't scare you and everyone is different...I hope this helps

I find the process totally painless! I enjoy chatting with my surgeon and his nurse while he's doing my fill.

I'm with Brina. Doesn't feel good. I am fine with giving blood and getting shots but the fills are a little more painful for me. So far they've had trouble finding my port and that tends to make me nauseous while they dig around trying to find it. They hit the metal part. Once they remove the needle I'm fine. Every one has a different experience though.

Just be prepared, they ask you to sit up with the needle still in your port. Kinda weird and I get woozy if I look at it.

I'm not normally wimpy but fills do weird things for me.

This last time she dug around so much I was uncomfortable and she finally gave me lidocaine and then it helped a little. Since I already had the needle stuck in my abdomen she was able to push the lidocaine in without sticking me more than once.

Try to relax as much as possible.

doesn't hurt at all. The worst part of my last fill was the spider racing across the wall towards me while I was lying on the bed!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
