So mad at my nutritionist!

Recommended Posts

I am so aggravated right now and am scared my surgery is going to be cancelled.

I emailed the program coordinator nurse 2 days ago and told her what a hard time I was having with the pre-op diet. I was throwing up, week and really feeling bad. I even posted on here. I told her I was having a hard time following the exact outline of the diet.

Now by me saying exact, I mean't that I wasn't able to eat in the morning at all because I threw up and I was so sick from that, that I didn't eat lunch until closer to dinner and then I ate dinner. I haven't eaten anything (ok one thing) that was not on the list. I have followed the measurements. I have done it by the rules, I just can't do some of the foods like cottage cheese and eggs. They make me throw up. I can't eat them no matter what. I've always had an egg aversion. Oh and the one bad thing I did have was a tablespoon of Peanut Butter which is still low card btw, but it was the day that I couldn't keep anything down and I thought I was going to pass out. I measured it out and felt so much better for the rest of the day. I've tracked all my calories and stay at or below 800 and lost 10 lbs this week.

So then the nutritionist sent me an email right before she left for the night today and said, "we are really concerned that you aren't following the pre-op diet" bla bla bla.

seriously? I have done the absolute best I can and eaten everything on the list in the portions you said. I just haven't been able to eat Breakfast.

What am I supposed to do? I've lost weight. No carbs, no sweets, low fat, no fruit NOTHING. I have stuck to her list!!!!

Now I think they are going to cancel my surgery.

If you really can't eat foods like eggs and cottage cheese, and especially if these foods are making you throw up, they should be offering you substitutions for your Protein needs. There are so many sources of lean Protein out there, it seems rather short-sighted and narrow-minded to not work with you on this. I hope you can sit down with them and explain the problem so that they understand this is not a lack of will on your part. Would they be forcing you to drink milk if you were lactose intolerant??

Nobody has said the pre-op diet is easy, but throwing up every day seems more unacceptable than finding a different protein that gets you through the day while still staying within your calories. Of course you should follow the instructions of your surgeon, but you aren't a child. You, your surgeon, nutritionist, support group, etc should all be on the same team. Just my 2 cents.

Kelly, Why not just call her back and say everything is fine now, maybe just a case of nerves.

It sounds like you're doing fine, just relax and try not to freak out, there's enough money in this

that they won't cancel unless there's really something wrong.

One thing to remember, on a carbohydrate restricted diet, your blood sugar can get low and cause

shakiness, sweating and overall nervousness. A piece of bread or a glass of juice should

take care of that. Whatever you do, don't call your nutritionist when you're in that state. She

sounds like a bit of a bully, and you need to talk to her in a calm, collected manner.

Good luck and I hope it all goes well.

There is no way you should be that sick on a pre-op diet, unless the food you're skipping is all of your protien. Or you are in cafiene withdrawal. I'd get on the phone in the morning and explain exactly what you have eaten. If she is still an insensitive twit, I'd look fir a new office. You need the support of the nutritionist

It seems from your post that there may have been miscommunication between you and the nutritionist.

Explain to her as you have to us what you meant by not following the diet. IF you need to, talk to the bariatric coordinator or the surgeon's nurse to get your point made. There is no reason for your surgery to be cancelled from what you posted. Good luck in getting it straightened out and on your surgery.

Fortunately she works on Saturdays and I asked her in my email to call me asap. I told her I felt like everything I've done wasn't worth a lot since they thought I wasn't following the plan. She apologized after what I told yall. She said I was doing good and to keep it up.

I am still so scared that I'm not doing enough to make my liver shrink, but I am working the plan.

kellysue, glad to hear that you talked to the office and got it straightened out. I felt sure once they understood what you meant that everything will be fine. Good luck on the rest of your journey.

Relax and calm down. Everyone gets the jitters before surgery. I only lost 8 lbs pre op and all was good. The surgery is really not that bad t all. Just eat what you can and don't eat the eggs and cottage cheese if you cannot tolerate it. You can have some Peanut Butter maybe on a rice cake and try the high Protein Soups. They helped me get thru the pre op and post op diet. One day at a time and you will succeed. Hang in there! Good Luck! CAT

I am feeling a lot better now both physically and mentally. I've lost 11 pounds so far, so I must be doing good. I think I overate at dinner, but it was all allowed foods. I am just having a hard time with eating in the morning so I usually skip breakfast. I know I don't need to do that, but it makes me sick. I really think I was throwing up and nauseous from coming off sugar. I don't know how drug addicts do it.

Kellysue,

Only prep diet I can only have two slim fast, 1 Protein Shake, and a small salad a day so I can't imagine them freaking out about u not being able to eat. I was starving at the beginning, but totally fine now. I had lost 7 lbs by last Thurs and my surgery is next Fri and they said nothing about more weight loss. I bet you'll be just fine and that they'll do it. Good luck. I'll be seeing u on here!

One of my concerns for you is post op egg and cottage cheese were what my doctor allowed during the mushie stage. If you can't eat those what will your doctor recommend? While I like egg I don't have time to make them in the morning before work. Instead I have a chobani 0% fat Greek Yogurt (with fruit) mixed with half a scoop whey isolate Protein Powder, two teaspoons Benefiber, and splendra (0% is quite sour), 1/3 cup high Protein Kashi Go Lean. This is about 250 calories but has 27 g of protein. May have more carbs for preop than you doctor would like. Post op however I had just the yoghurt but used a hand blender to chop up the fruit pieces (not Pomergranate).

They told me I would be on a liquid diet for 4 days then soft foods like mashed potatoes, pudding etc...I love homemade greek yogurt, so that will be easy for me during the mushy stage, but no eggs for me. Just making them for my family this morning almost made me vomit.

I hate eggs, and i have done just fine getting my Protein without ever eating one ;) You'll be just fine! I do a Protein shake for Breakfast every morning, it's easy and I have a few sugar free flavored syrups that I mix in to flavor them and make them taste different. Cottage cheese... I like it well enough but I haven't had it in months. I do a lot of greek yogurt.

It sounds like you're going to be just fine :) Good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
