Hypoglycemic attacks after lap band

Recommended Posts

With in the last 3-- 4 months i have been having these attacks, shaking, headaches, feeling like i'm going to faint. Can it be from skipping meals, this has only happened after my surgery,i have never had this before the lap band.i drank a Protein Shake at around 2 pm,then walked around a few stores feeling fine, around 6pm i started feeling funny, the shaking in my hands, just feeling really weird, and i was not hungry at the time.It scared me so much i had a full blown out panic attack.I drank a bottle of orange Vitamin Water ,and maybe with in a half an hour felt better, but now i have a really bad headache..it was so bad i thought i was going to die or pass out,all this for not eating for 4 hrs.,i did have a small bite sample of pizza at the grocery store... freaking scary.Anyone else ever have this? thanks

As a recovering diabetic I can tell you those are the symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Your blood sugar sounds like it's getting low. Very unpleasant. I use to get it when

my blood sugar got below 100. Now that I've lost weight, a reading 70 to 80 doesn't

bother me. Walmart sells glucose tablets, but a little candy will work until you get

used to it. Hope this helps.

I became very hypoglycemic after surgery. My blood sugar was 41 an hour after a meal at the doctors. You just have to eat more Protein to keep you sugar up. I have resorted to eating every 2 hours like a piece of cheese or something with protein. It happens to me every day even if I have eaten so I try to eat frequently but not a lot at one time. This helps some but not always. Good luck with that one.

The tablets are just glucose (sugar) to raise your blood sugar to proper levels. They

work the same as orange juce, table sugar or any carbohydrate. We can't live without

some carbs, we just need to keep the levels low. Your body will probably adjust

to your new levels, but you need to be under a doctor's supervision if there is any

question about blood sugar levels. Diabetes isn't anything to fool around with.

I hope this helps.

I'm hypoglycemic since surgery. Also, my blood pressure is much lower. Which it was always normal before. Luckily, I was with my mother in law(who is a nurse) once when I when I almost passed out... And we happened to be at the hospital at the time. She checked my blood pressure(108/56) and my blood sugar was 52. Drank an orange juice and I was back to good in no time. I just eat a snack if I'm feeling weak.

I have had the same thing happen to me after surgery. I have an appointment with my Physician this week to have a glucose tolerance test done. Being in the medical field as a Paramedic, I have done a bit of my own research. I believe what we might be experiencing is Reactive Hypoglycemia. Here a a link from mayo Clinic explaining Reactive Hypoglycemia http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/reactive-hypoglycemia/AN00934 . I think that you should see your doctor to find out exactly is going on in your body. When you eat or drink something with sugar in it, lets say a Protein Drink with added sugar! This causes your body to release insulin to breakdown the sugar and use it for energy. Your body is use to releasing a lot of insulin from when we were indulging in sweets before the surgery. So, your body continues to release a lot of insulin. Once that little bit of sugar is consumed by the insulin and used as energy, the body continues to dump out insulin looking for sugar that you ate. However, there is no more sugar there. Your blood sugars begin to fall below normal limits, your pancreas creates glucogon and tells your liver to break down the glycogen which releases glucose into your blood stream. This will cause your blood sugars to begin to rise to a normal level. Your body then releases epinephrine (adrenalin) into your blood stream this is what makes you shaky. Most people would eat or drink sugar to make their blood sugar rise. This will only make it worse in someone with Reactive Hypoglycemia the cycle continues.

It is recommended for persons with Reactive hypoglycemia, to eat small meals throughout the day including lean Proteins and foods that are high in Fiber. Make sure that you are limiting simple carbs and sugary substances. This will prevent your body from dumping too much insulin when you eat. If you are experiencing these symptoms make sure you see your doctor. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on television. This is research I have done on my own that I am sharing with you. I have experienced many of these symptoms myself, and I have contacted my Physician for testing. Good luck, let me know what you find out!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
