Banded 8/2010 and now having trouble

Recommended Posts

Starting with the "facts", I was banded in Aug 2010. Had my gallbladder removed prior to the band. I have had several fills and have been doing well until just recently. Started having severe heartburn then what I call explosive acid refulx. Then I began getting right side pain just under my ribs that would wrap around to my back just below my shoulder blade. Next thing was when I would eat I had excrutiating pain like churning glass in my stomach. It was almost unbearable. I called my GI doc and he did and EGD (scope into stomach) and all clear there. He did an abdominal scan to see if I had a loose gallstone floating around. Again, all clear. I finally called my lapband doc and they did a barium swallow test. All the barium I drank just sat in my pouch instead of passing right through like it should. Turns out my band was way too tight and irritated. So it was pretty much a complete unfill for me for the next month or so. It's been 3 weeks and things are better. I can eat food without pain. YAY! -- not so fast. I'm starting to have the right side/back pain again. It's nothing like before, more of a tightness and discomfort kinda pain. No stomach pain though. Has anyone else had this? It reminds me of the gallbladder pain I had but I don't have a gallbladder anymore. So what in the world can it be? Anyone have any ideas? I see my lapband doc again next week, but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this too and maybe found some resolution. Thanks!!

That's crazy... Sounds like text book gallbladder attacks but since you don't have yours anymore.... I don't know what it could be! That sounds absolutely terrible though. I'm sorry you're going through so much pain and I wish i could bepre of a help. Hope you find some answers and feel better soon!

I had mine out 9 yrs ago and sometimes i get pains where the gallbladder used to be. i wonder if those ducts could be somehow blocked, i dont know. Hope it gets better soon. BTW, Dr Malley did my band surgery too. Love him :)

Have them check your pancreas. Pancreatic pain can often present itself this way.

my sister had gallbladder surgery a while back. she called me about a month later with excrutiating pain and I had to rush her to the emergency room. They found that the doctor didn't do something correctly with the bile duct - apparently you still pass gallstones after you have the gallbladder removed and the stones were getting stuck at the end of the duct. They had to go back in and correct it. Don't know if this is you but since it has been such a long time maybe not.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
