Tricare and no Co-morbidities?????

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been approved with Tricare for Lap Band without having any co-morbidities? I had my docs apt with my PCM this morning and he's going to put in a referral for the surgery. other than being over wight I dont have any other co-morbidities. Has anyone else been approved through Tricare without having any? Im worried they'll deny (Doc said i should have a problem) my request to get the surgery done.

Odd thing is he never tested it. He merely told me after talking about the situation that I am a candidate for the surgery and that i Shouldnt have a problem getting approved by insurance. I thought it was odd, but i can always go through my next appt. whether it be my pcm or my consult with the surgeon. Im 5'5 @ 316.

I qualified through Tricare and I had no co-morbidities. Your BMI is 52.6. You should qualify also. I was 5'1" and 345, so my BMI was definitely high enough. You can always check Tricare's website also. Good Luck!!

My husband had tricare when he was deployed butane I've never heard great things about it from the wives. Your bmi doesn't have to be tested they use your height and weight. GOod luck I'm sure it will be approved unless they have time restrictions

I was appproved through Tricare, then I did a genious move my enrolling in my new company's Health Care, so I had to wait about 30 days to get my insurence cards. I was approved by both.

I know a number of people who were approved for Tricare on their BMI alone. Good luck.

***Update*** I received a call from my pmc's office today saying that Tricare is requesting me to go to a nutritionist (given), check in every 6 weeks with my pcm to record progress, and that i HAVE to have records of a diet plan along the lines of Weigh Watchers or Jenny Greg ect.. Then they topped that sundae with the beautiful news that i'd have to pay for that diet plan out of pocket. The wind is slowly but surly being knocked outta my sails. It seems like everytime i get closer to getting approved for the surgery i get knocked back 3 steps. we'll see that happens from here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
