Caffine

I am currently going through the process of taking the pretests for lap band surgery. I really need my several cups of coffee in the morning. Do you have to give up coffee or can you start the morning with it. I really don't feel like eating when I first get up.

My doc wants us to limit it to 2 -3 cups a day. I used to drink a ton of coffee, like over a pot a day, but I'm good now. I think the reason I'm okay now is that I started sleeping with a CPAP, and I now have tons more energy than I had just a few months ago. My doc makes you do a sleep study, and I'm happy that he did. My insurance only requires a psych, but I had to do a lot of stuff for my surgeon. I don't mind. Now, I'm just patiently awaiting a date.

I was a pot in the morning drinker. I am now drinking none. It took a while to get off coffee and diet pepsi, but I did it. I am afraid to go back to any caffeine as I am sleeping so much better and do not want to mess that up. Although I bought a diet snapple tea today but haven't drank it yet.

I drink as much coffee as I want. I'm a rebel, I guess! I just have to watch the calories on the fancy coffee house drinks. I don't see a reason why you can't drink it, my doc has never said anything about it. I drink about 2-3 cups a day. Good luck in your surgery!

I try to limit coffee to Fridays only. But I think you are supposed to limit your caffeine intake. Just drink Decaf, it's not so bad

I was NEVER told to limit caffeine intake post band and it's not in my post op directions. LOL! I drink a cup every morning with cream and 3 Splendas. Hot drinks help those of us with stubborn bands open up a little, so we can start to eat and drink throughout the day. I'm not sure about pre-op because I didn't drink coffee then, so I would ask my doc or nurse.

I have to drink coffee in the morning in order to take my meds. I have really bad Insomnia so after that it is Decaf anytime I drink it. My doctor and staff never told me no coffee. But if I am hungry coffee kills my hunger too. I am sure a bottle of Water will too.

I also have anxiety that I take meds for and my Dr. told me one bottle of coke or coffe wipes out your anxiety meds if it has caffine in it.

Like others who responded, I used to drink 2 X-Large coffees per day. I've limited that to 1 regular size cup of regular coffee (black w/ 1 Splenda).

I was told to control my intake of caffeine during the first few weeks after surgery, but nothing about Week 5 and beyond.

I choose to limit my caffeine because, according to many nutritionists, Caffeine is an appetite stimulant, so you could tend to have more cravings etc...as a result.

My doc's office told me the reason why they want you to limit it the first few weeks is that they don't want you to become dehydrated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
