Day 4 Post Op - trying to stay off Hydrocodone...

Recommended Posts

My Doctor gave me Hydrocodone for pain and I used it my first three days of post-op. It helped a lot to combat my incision pain (although the heating pad and Gas-X strips were the only thing that has worked for gas pain), but I find that Hydrocodone makes me unable to mentally focus on anything.

When I take Hydrocodone, I can't read more than a page of a book; I can't get work done on my laptop; I can't even watch TV. Anyone else have this experience?

I'm going to try hard to stay off the Hydrocodone today (Day 4 Post-op) and just deal with the incision pain. Overall, I think my recovery is going okay, but I think it's going to take a good 10 days total before I'm starting to feel half-way normal again.

Hydrocodone is great for relieving pain, but you might try Tylenol

now that the worst is over. It's the only OC pain reliever we're

supposed to take. You might try Vitamin B12 sublingual (under the tongue)

for unusual fatigue. It sure helped me. Don't try to do too much

for a while, let your body heal. Best of luck, hang in there.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement Corrigan!

you could also ask your doctor if you can try Percoset. That is the pain med I am taking and I love it because my head stays clear but it relieves the pain.

I have seen on here for a lot of people that days 3 and 4 post-op are the worst for them, and they were for me as well. I took the Vicodin until day 4 and pretty much slept through the pain. Days 5 and 6 I only took it at bedtime, then I quit it altogether. The Tylenol suggestion is a great idea. Hang in there, it will get better. Good luck to you on your journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
