depression and the band

Recommended Posts

After your surgery, did any of you feel depressed for a while? I'm almost 4 weeks post-op and I just feel so out of it still. Maybe it's the crappy weather (damn you, Michigan!), maybe it's mourning for the binges I used to have, maybe it's just that I hate school, I don't know. I haven't really felt like myself since the surgery. I just want to sleep all the time... I started using the Unjury Protein Powder to see if it would help boost my energy, but it's only been a week and I haven't noticed a difference yet. Just wanted to vent! Any stories or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Shana -

I have read several posts that state anesthesia can leave some people feeling very depressed. I don't know how long anesthesia related depression lasts, but it wouldn't hurt for you to see you PCP about it. It could be that, or you could be suffering regular depression that is coincidental to your surgery.

No one should have to suffer with depression - there are many different medications that can help, and being on one doesn't mean you have to take them forever. I was on Wellbutrin for 6 months in 2001 - no meds since, and no relapses.

So definitely consult your PCP!

Thanks for the adivce, Donali!

I take Paxil for anxiety, etc. I think just typing out my original post helped me realise what the problem is. I had my surgery over winter break, two days after my boyfriend's mother passed away, and now I'm back at law school (which I hate), where I have to study and clean and shovel snow. I need some warm weather and a vacation!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
