I do not have my surgery date yet but I hope to soon and I was starting to rethink my choice for the band and then I found you guys! I have enjoyed reading each of your success as well as your struggles. I have a long way to go I want to loose a total of 175lbs and I have to loose 30 pounds before my surgery so I have to go pretty much no carb for the next two months. I know I can do it I just would love some pointers for how any of you lost post op weight to "shrink your liver"? I have a nutrition class on Nov 10th but I need to get started asap. HELP :)

I'm so excited and can't wait to get one of those cute little tracker things :)

Hey there  Congrats on being on your way! My surgeon put me on a 2 week liquid diet, pre-op. I was on Protein Shakes and Water with crystal light. It was really hard but I lost 26 pounds in 2 weeks. lol It may be something to consider if you need a quick reduction or if it's coming down to the wire for you. I was put on this with the purpose of shrinking my liver, I wasn't given a weight reduction requirement or anything. Good luck with everything, the surgery is worth it. :)

The nurse told me I would have to do the two weeks but that I needed to start cutting back now sense I need to loose 30lbs. I really hope to have my surgery in Dec and with Thanksgiving I am worried I will not do so great with low-card but I know I can do it. But I am excited about the possibility of loosing that much in two weeks! That is crazy! :)

Thanks for the response :o)

Yea you have to shrink your liver so they can lift it to get to the stomach. Don't drive yourself nuts just try to follow this as much as you can. After the first two days it gets easier and I was allowed to add a lean cuisine for dinner under 300 calories. Good Luck

I havent had my surgery yet, we are required to see a dietician for 3 months. When my dr. suggested this procedure it was the end of may, so far just following the dieticians directions I have lost 35 lbs. I need to loose about 120 more.

The best advice I got was how to eat, I started cutting back on alot of things because I knew that after the surgery I wouldnt be able to have them, and I didnt want to go through withdrawls. So out went the chips, Cookies, cake and Desserts. I followed the Proteins, vegs, then fruit. Working on reducing the portions.

I didnt do this all at one time just a little and thought alot about how I was doing this for me and my health. I am so suprised at how little I can eat and get full. I am also working on smaller bites and stopping when I am full, listening to my body. I hope by doing this now I will be in the habit, I want this to be a life changing future. I know that it wont magically come off, I will have to work with it everyday, but I am ready.

I hope that this helps you with some ideas to get you started before you get your diet from the drs.

Good Luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
