How many of you have hypothyroidism?

Recommended Posts

I've had it for 16 years. My levels were last checked in March, I think. Anyway lately I wake up feeling so sleepy, I'm weak/ lightheaded and I've developed a horrible case of dandruff.

I've lost about 30 pounds since they were last checked. I'm getting in my daily Protein, Vitamins and Water so my thyroid is the first thing I think of.

As you've lost weight have your thyroid meds increased or decrease any?

I'm going to the doc tomorrow. If it's nit my thyroid then I'm not sure what else it could be.

We were advised that if we became unusually tired, to take a sublingual B12 tablet (under the tongue).

I'm also hypothyroidic and have just had my levels checked. I'm also more tired than usual and wonder

if it's not caused by losing weight somehow. I see my surgeon next week and I'll ask him. I hope that's all

it is.

Before surgery I was on 125 mcg of thyroxin. I am now at 100 mcg, and it might be lowered still. I've lost 56 lbs since surgery.

I had a total thyroidectomy 12 years ago so I will be on Synthroid for the rest of my life. One thing I can tell you from experience is to stay on top of your thyroid meds (TSH levels) as you lose weight!!

My endocrinologist normally wants to see me every 6 months and I really didn't think much about moving that visit up after I had surgery but I noticed that I wasn't feeling well and mentioned it to him when I went in for my normal visit. When they tested my TSH it was .01 and my doctor almost had a heart attack!

In the past several months, I have had my dosage decreased several times (I started out at .175 and am now at .112) and will be going back in a week to do some more bloodwork to see if they need to reduce it again. The last time I was tested, my TSH was still below the normal range.

I really wish I had stayed on top of it more while I was losing weight because if I had waited much longer I would have probably ended up in the hospital because of it.

See my family doc says thyroid meds decrease as you lose weight. My surgeon says they increase. The fact that they don't agree just makes me want them checked more often. LOL

I see a Endocrinologist for my Hypo Thyroid.

He has me on Armour Thyroid. It is a Natural Medication made from the Thyroid of a animal.

I was skeptic at first. But the other Meds did not work on me. So I thought, what have you got to lose?

Anyway it is GREAT Stuff ! I feel wonderful !

I'm awake ! and the Vitamins with choline in it helps allot, then add in the Protein shake, and I am ready to Rock n Roll all day long

I have had thyroid disease since I was 15 yrs old. I am hypothyroid as I had my thyroid removed surgically. My endo told me as I lost weight she would most likely reduce my thyroid medication. I had a check with her recently and have lost 30 pds and I am more hypo than I was before the weight loss. I have decided to keep my meds the same for the time being and recheck again in 2 mths. As you lose weight typically you should need a lower dose of thyroid medication. This thyroid business had a mind of it's own and can be quite fickle at times.

We don't have an endocrinologist where I live:( I did try the armour thyroid before though. I couldn't get past the taste and smell of it.

Not only do i have hypothyroidism, i have hoshimotos disease, its been hard !! ive had my dose upped once since losing weight. my symptoms would be a pressure headache and feeling like im walking sideways...off balance. Oh and i switched recently from my endocrynologist to my primary care for treatment. My primary gives me synthroid not the generic. He feels thyroid meds are like heart medication...you only should get the real deal.

My health insurance and my doctor feel the same way. My doc only gives Synthroid and my insurance covers it for a generic copay. My labwork should be back Monday. I'm starting to thing I maybe on too much Synthroid though. A short walk lives my heart pounding and I have to sit down to catch

My breath. My blood pressure is up again. I've been off blood pressure meds for months now and my blood pressure has never been high until now.

I have had hypothyroidism for 19 years now. Before my weight loss journey started I was on 200 mcg now 6 months later or so I just had it checked again 1 month ago and my docotr has kept me on 200 mcg so for me my weight loss has not made any difference in the strength of my medicine.

At least 20 yrs. ago, they finally discovered that I had Hypothyroidism . I had been tested as far as 37 yrs. ago, and even though the Dr. said it was, when I saw a specialist, and had die shot in me, with X-RAYS in a Leaded Walled Room.... They said I was fine.

Turns out mine fluctuates from Hypo to Hyper says the PCP. The Endro. says no its Hypo. So I went through synthroid, it does not absorb into me.

I was asked time, and time again if I even take the Medication ? Yes why do you think I'm here for a blood test, if I'm not taking them. Anyway it never worked.

So I moved, and I explained it to a new PCP, and she say's she has heard of this happening, so she prescribed the Generic.

Fast Forward in time I started to feel Terrible, and she told me I was at a good level. Well it got worse, so I stopped taking them.

I seen her and told her, and she flipped ! Don't you know you could DIE ? NO! No one ever told me about this. So she said I'm putting you back on, and don't stop taking them ! ! !

I told her why do I want to take something, that makes me feel terrible ? I want to see a Endocrinologist... She looked at me and said your right ! I'm not qualified to deal with a problem, if its that complex. So i will send you to one.

He said we start fresh, forget the past, and I guarantee you will feel better...

So he put me on Armour Thyroid "a natural medication" It works ! My levels are Normal "for the first time in my life" I agree that it tastes terrible, but what are you going to do about it.....

So I see him next month, and see how I am doing.

But I can't complain about it. Not when it works.

Yep my brother's wife had Hyper. It went untreated because the doctor's just didn't realize she had it. One night she passed out and he called 911. She ended up in ICU on a ventilator not responding at all and it was due to the fact that her thyroid was untreated. It scared me so badly. Something I won't forget.

They told my brother she had had a stroke and it was fatal but they were totally wrong. She went home 9 days later on meds.

four years ago when I was pregnant with my son I was tested and was told I had Hyperthyroidism. Then right after that I was Hypothyroidism. Anyhow went for an ultrasound and my thyroind was enlarged and had small nodes in it. No meds though. Since then my TSH has been normal and all I do is go in for yearly testing and ultrasounds. I have my first one post surgical and am curious of any changes. I have been tired lately but am going to try the B12.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
