your pain after surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for Nov 7th,and I wanted to know about the pain afterwards, I have had five csections, and my last one was pain.free, but I did have my.tonsils taken out this year at 33 and it was the worst pain ever literally,I know everyone's pain tolerance is different but I just want to see how it was for everyone, I hate taking pain.meds especially liquid pain.meds...

The day of surgery was terrible for me. The pain meds were not working for me and I damn near ripped a nurses head off. After they realized I wasn't kidding around they upped the dosage, and I was better not pain free but I would say around a 3 or 4 on a scale of 1 - 10. I found the absoulute worst thing was the gas not the actual insicions. I had surgery Oct 6th so I'm 4 days post op and I still have terrible trapped gas in my chest and stomach which can make it really hard to breath at times. I've used Gas X and walked and walked and walked and still I'm in pain with the gas. I haven't taken any pain meds since Friday night so I'm healing good and feeling sore but everyday gets better. I find that if I keep a heating pad on the stomach and chest the gas is at bay but as soon as I take it off it's there again.

Good luck to you I'm sure C-section recovery is far worse, but I don't know all my babies were born vaginally, and that was a breeze for me.

Congrats on your surgery..

How long did u take off work?

I'm back at work today. I have a desk job so it's not too bad, but I can tell you sitting in my office chair and wearing a bra is so far been the most uncomfortable. My bra just feels tight and and restricting and the chair well its a office chair need I say more !

I guess i was one of the lucky ones, almost no pain at all. The throat rawness from the

intubation device was the worst and it was gone in three days.

I had my surgery on a Thursday and was really sore & uncomfortable until Sunday. I wasnt necessarily in pain, but I was very sore and didnt take into account how sore my stomach and stomach muscles would be so it was really hard to get in and out of bed. I would recommend a recliner/or to be in an upright position in your bed. Also... a heating pad was my best friend for helping the soreness and staying comfortable.

I had my surgery on Oct 7, 2011 so I am 3 days post op. The main thing that is terrible is the gas. You have gas in your back, side, chest, seems like everywhere. The incision itself is not that bad. I was sent home with Tylenol 3/Coedine. DO NOT work. The only thing that really help me is walking throughout the house. Sip some warm tea, and walk.

I'm 2 weeks out and have had 3 c-sections and a gallblader surgery. I have to say the actual pain was minimal- seriously just discomfort-- i didnt even need pain meds or even tylenol--although.... I'm still not totally myself. I had no gas at all. I just felt tired and weak sometimes light headed till about day 10. If i sit or stand for too long now im uncomfortable but its ok I was hoping bc I had been getting in shape since feb it would be easier BUT as everyone will tell you everyone is different. I tried to

predict my recovery too it's just impossible to do.

That said you will do fine! It's def an easier surgery than a c-section. Just listen to your body once you have had your surgery and make sure you have help if you need it :) good luck!

Honestly, I took my pain meds the day after surgery and have not had to take anything since. I did not even have the horrible gas that people complain about. I think it is truly different for every patient. I have had way worse pain from dental procedures and from kidney stones than I did from this.

It took me a week to feel no pain. And two weeks to feel normal. I guess I'm a slow healer and don't have a high pain tolerance. I've never had surgery prior to the lap band so it was a whole new ball game for me. The gas pain made me miserable. I slept sitting straight up for 4 nights. My suggestions: heating pad! Walking, Popsicles, hot showers. Have someone rub your shoulders. On day 7 I went and had a massage and a chiropractic adjustment and it helped so much. I wish I would have done it sooner.

I was one of the lucky ones . I had no surgical pain at all. I took my pain meds one time and that was to please my husband lol .

The only thing I felt was my upper stomach felt like I did a million and one sit ups but it wasn't painful .

I had my surgery at 1PM and home that night at 7 pm . I think what saved me was I did so much walking. I walked till I got tired of walking. Walking takes the gas out and does help with healing.

When I got back to my room at the hospital I was out of bed within 15 min . That was around 315. I walked for 20 min and sat down for 10 min and walked again I did that clear through 7 pm when they released me.

I did go home and rest that night but the next day I walked like that again for the whole day .

And trust me I have no high pain tolerance lol. I am probably the biggest baby in the world when it comes to pain

I am 2 weeks postop today. For the first 3-4 days, I had some pain at the port site, and gas pain, but nothing unbearable. I didn't take any pain meds in the hospital and only 2 or 3 doses of the liquid pain med at home so I could get a good nights sleep. My problem is getting in enough fluids and feeling weak all the time. You will do just fine. Surely a C-section is much worse than this!! Good luck

This is so bizarre to me. Everyone saying pain is minimal. My c-section was like a small splinter compare to This band. It hurt Like hell. I'm still weak 3 weeks and 3 days later. Still not myself. a few years ago I had another surgery that was suppose to be fine after a month took me 4 months to recover. I dont like surgery and it doesn't like me.

So in contrast to everyone else its going to hurt long time.

Plan 4 -6 weeks off work.

For me the first day, I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. I was so uncomfortable. Tokk the pain meds probably every 5-6 hours. Day 2 post op, felt so much better, still painful, but took pain meds probably 3 times or so. Day 3 I was uncomfortable, but not crazy painful, I took th pain meds once, and that was because I got TOM and I got bad cramps, but that one dose knocked them out for good. After that dose, I may have taken liquid tyelonol a couple times within the next couple days, but I had minimal pain. Getting up was sore and getting out of bed, but no pain meds needed.

I had mine put in this morning. Right now there is no real pain, I am just sore. As someone else posted, it feels like I have done a lot of crunches. The only other surgery that I have to really compare it to is the one on my leg. I have plate and 11 screws. The pain after that one was a 1000 times worse than this one. For me, the anticipation of this procedure is much worse than the procedure itself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
