Hi, I am new to the forum. I am having my surery on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. I am sick of the shakes and Jello. :) I am excited but worried of anesthesia and overall OR complications. I believe this feeling is normal because anyone having surgery must feel this way. I have confidence in my surgeon. He is a veteran in this field but... My imediate family is very supportive, I havent told my extended family. I think once I have gone through surgery and a few weeks have gone by I might let them know or not :) This is about me and not them! I am looking forward to the changes... I am excited!!! Best of luck to everyone scheduled for surgery in the incoming weeks and moths.

Hi and welcome,

You are right....It is about you. I have told my immediate family (my husband and my children) but I have and will not tell my sisters who live out of state. I will tell them the next time I see them but only if they ask. It really isn't the " I would like to surprise them mentality" but the fact that I would never have their support for the surgery. They are the gut it up and do it type. My children understand that they are not to tell my sisters. Really other than them, I don't care who knows. I have al lot of support with my friends locally and out of town.

I haven't had surgery yet but from what I have read, the jitteries are very normal for where you are at.

I sincerely wish you all the best and I hope you will drop in with any questions and/or progress reports.

Melinda

Hi Melinda,

Thank you for your response. I agree, my family would judge and not be very receptive. The would say I am taking the easy way out. They would also gossip if I didnt show immediate results. They are good people but they are quick to judge. Only two friends know and as time goes by I will share with the others. This decision is about changing my life and making the right changes to improve my life. I'm working on my PhD and the path I have chosen requires me to be at a "normal" weight. I dont have health concerns but I can see that changing in a few years if I continue gaining weight. I think its a good decision you made not to share with your family. I think they all react the same way they dont understand what a big decision this is! Stay focused! Best of luck! I will keep posting on how I do! I wish you all the sucess in your decision. Thanks for the support!

Patricia

Hi and welcome! Congrats on your upcoming surgery on Tuesday.

I didn't share with family that I was having surgery. My husband of course new I was, but I have four small children (6,7,10,&12). I didn't see they needed to know at this point or would completely understand what was going on. I did tell a few friends not many though. It's a personal decision and I didn't want all the talking behind my back. I have found my biggest support comes from my husband and the support group that the hospital has twice a month. There isn't very many lap band patients that go, but I learn things from the other people. We are all going through the something no matter what surgery we had.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
