What questions should I ask my doctor?

Recommended Posts

I'm meeting with my Doctor for the first time on the 11th and my surgery is on the 13th. Things are admittedly rushed for me, but my work schedule is very restrictive and I don't want to push my surgery back any further.

I've been reading different posts on this forum and have compiled a few questions to ask my Doctor. Please let me know if there are any other questions you would recommend asking. I'm a self-pay patient, btw.

-What is your fill policy? When will I be able to get my first fill?

-What should be my pre-surgery diet? (Day before; Day of)

-What is your recommended diet plan post-surgery?

-Can I get my pain med prescription before the surgery?

-Will you be able to get some of the gas out towards the end of surgery?

-Who do I call if I have problems after my surgery?

As a fellow pre-op self spay, hello Iceali!

Some of the questions are pretty basic and (hopefully) some of the more experienced bandsters can give you some tips. Some of the other ones I had are:

Kinda vain, lol but Re: scarring, do you use, stpales, stitches, glue? Some scar better than others (I've been told)

Can i fill out my scripts before surgery cos i'm by myself and wanna get that taken care of while I can

What are the risk factors for failure/intolerance? Because this is my last dime, don't have anymore money lying around.

What meds do I need/are helpful to have in hand for recovery?

Through the forums, I've heard a lot of talk about "repairing hernias". Is that something I need to worry about?

Hope those helped a little :)

What time do I need to be at the hospital,

What time is the surgery scheduled,.

Can I expect to go home same day.,

Can I leave with my needed meds, provided by the hospital pharmacy.

When do you want to see me in your office for the post-op follow up? (1 week) can we make that appointment now.

What is your timetable for Clear Liquids, heavy liquids, mushies and solid foods.

Explain to me the severe gas pain I hear others talk about, and what do you suggest I do if/when I get it.

Unless you're prepaired to change doctors, there's probably no need to ask about his experience.

You might ask if he's going to have you meet with a nutritionist and provide you with a post-op

diet. Don't forget to take PJs and slippers because you don't want to be walking down the hall

holding your gown closed in the back. I hope your surgery is as good as mine was.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
