It all depends in your insurance req, bc I hv a 90 day supervised diet req so my dr has to wait til my 90 days r up and then he will file asap, my dr encourages his patient to lose weight, and I also researched it to that is a good idea to lose weight and start an excercise regimen way b4 surgery, with that said I set my own personal target of losing 25lbs by my 11/21 surgery date, and as far as insurance co dr turns in my initial weight for approval

My blue cross plan has no pre requirements, but I had to meet with the nurse practitioner, dietician, and psychologist. Met with surgeon twice and got my surgery date , which is 10/12. So, it was two months total from first meeting to banding date. I'm on day 11 pre op liquids. In home stretch. Good luck to you!

My insurance did not have a weight loss requirement but my doctor did. 10% body weight. Think of it this way. The surgeon needs to make his way through your body using a camera and some probes (Highly recommend watching real lap band surgery on youtube not at all bloody) the less stuff ie fat in his way the better. While I had to delay surgery for other health reasons I had lost my 32 pounds (10%) in 3 months.

the more you lose the easier it will be at surgery time. remember we will lose between 40 and 60% of our body weight with the band. getting started b4 will get your mind in the right place for the changes and give you a head start. ask lots of questions of your Doc, his nurse, the nutritionist. they all have great information. good luck!!! this is probably the best thing I have ever done for myself!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
