Finally told them...

Recommended Posts

Well, I finally told the 4 ladies in my office that I was planning on doing the surgery since only one of us can take off at a time and I work so closely with them, I knew they would notice..

3 of the ladies were very supportive and the other one said her mother in law had it and she was very disheartened because she feels she took the easy way out. I knew I would have some negative responses, but the easy way out? Really??

Obviously she is very uneducated about it and what really shocked me is that she said "I think my mother in law could have done it the right way and worked out and ate less and blah blah"..What is so shocking is that this girl is my age and is overweight as well. Obviously she isn't doing it the "right way" either since she isn't losing any weight. Ugh. The lack of education around here is overwhelming sometimes.

Oh well, we'll see who gets skinnier faster!! ;)

That sounds like a combination of jealousy and ignorance. A lot of people think you just get the band and then you just get skinny without any effort. Whatever......

Yea, I wanted to tell her to read my information that I got from the surgeons office. This isn't just some fad diet, this is for the rest of my life. Nothing about this surgery even SOUNDS like the easy way out! She is ridiculous!

If it was so easy, you would never hear stories about people who gain some weight back. You would also never see any overweight people becasue everyone would just get the band and be skinny!

Ignore her. I have a lady at my work that talks bad about us bandsters (there are a total of 4 of us now) when in reality we think shes just jealous bc shes too scared to get it done bc shes had cancer. I swear, when she opens her mouth i wanna punch it. Your (and my) coworker is obviously ignorant. This is your journey so keep moving forward!

I have an aunt who thinks I'm taking the easy way out too. He mother was an alcoholic, who beat her addiction after 30 years, and she thinks that being overweight is the same as being an addict. I love her to death, but she just doesn't understand weight issues, because she watches everything she eats and works out. It's a part of her life and always has been.

I am huge because I eat the wrong things, and I eat too much of everything. I know what I'm doing, but I don't have the control to do this on my own, and I don't understand how the choices I make that lead me to be fat have a negative impact on others. I told my aunt that the band is a tool that I am using to help me lose weight and that I owed it to myself to try it, but she insists that I should do it my own. I asked her why anyone would buy a cordless drill, when a screwdriver got the job done just fine, and she didn't quite know how to answer that one. She wants me to get into a 12 step program to deal with my weight, and she is "praying" that I can have the band removed some day and keep the weight off. She told me all I had to do was to avoid "all bad food" for the rest of my life.

I get so frustrated with our society, because we help and treat all other addictions as a disease, at the same time we legally discriminate and ridicule those of us with weight problems. I hope I'm not coming across as unsympathetic to those with addictions, I don't intend to. We can and should help everyone to the full extent of our ability. I'm just wanting to understand why enjoying food and being overweight should be considered some kind of personality flaw, that deserves to be ridiculed instead of getting the same kinds of treatment options as those available to addicts of any kind.

addiction is addiction, I am a recovering alcoholic of 29 yrs. we (alcoholics) tend to trade one addiction for another. when we remember we are not the master of all we can succeed. we need to believe in a higher power to find success. we have to remember that many people want to do this surgery and for many reasons, don't. instead of hate think love. you don't have to say anything to them, just think a positive thought for them. you never know, it could work. it has for me.

I know that if I feel hate (or even strong dislike) for another person, I set myself up for failure, because of the guilt.

keep doing what your doc tells you to do, tell the people you know will support you, take it one day at a time. our health is the most important thing. we want to live and feel that health for a long time!

You said it readytogoforit...to my knowledge, there is only one higher power and He is the one I answer too...not the lady in the office.

You are so right to ignore your co-worker. Maybe this would be a good time to give her a little education about how difficult living with the lap band will be. It makes me angry that outright discrimination is allowed for anyone who is overweight. You can be discriminated against when applying for a job or home, it is perfectly legal. People need to know that this is a huge decision and will take alot of commitment and strength. We are risking death in major surgery, to become thin and healthy. If we could do it on our own, that would be the easy way out...not surgery. I am prepared to live with this choice, even being aware of the many, many things that I will not be able to eat anymore, but that is the price to pay and it is OK with me. However, it is not OK for anyone to belittle us for being brave and going through this process. Not one person has ever had an easy time going through this process, from the consults with surgeon, psych eval, colonoscopy, endoscopy, sleep study, pre-surgery diet, etc... it is a major undertaking. Maybe it is so difficult so that only people who are mentally prepared for the journey will be successful...Oh well, I just wanted to rant a little bit. Good luck and God Bless..

There is always a Schlep Rock in the group to rain on the parade. Education won't help. Actions speak louder than words, so go make it happen and continue being positive. Could be a touch of jealousy in there as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
