Incisional itching/swelling

Recommended Posts

I peeled my dermabond off last night. It was starting to peel and really getting on my nerves. The incisions look pretty good, well healed. Today the incisions itch like crazy. I haven't been scratching directly on them, but around them. Tonight I notice the incisional areas are very swollen. Has this happened to anyone else? How long will the itching last?

Be careful! I did the same thing to mine & they ended up splitting open & infecting!

Yep.. My port incision got infected and I had another surgery... If it swells anymore let your surgeon know. Not to freak you out, but that's how mine all began.

You'll probably be fine, but keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, have a medical professional look at it.

(I guess this is redundant but bears repeating).

I had severe itching to the point that I would scratch so much I was breaking the skin on my stomach. I would scratch in my sleep. My incision would swell as well. My surgeon said it was mostly likely an allergic reaction to something and had me take benadryl and it worked. Also no infections!

I talked to the surgeons office today. They said it is probably an allergic reaction to the dermabond. They told me to use hydrocortisone cream and benadryl. It really itches. I can not keep my hands off of it. I hope it gets better soon. Thanks for the input.

Mine itched like CRAZY!!!! I would itch everywhere all around them. I would put ice on them and that helped. It drove me insane!

Not looking forward to this. Anybody using neosporin to help the incisions heal faster? My surgery is at the end of this month. EEK! I will keep the benadryl in mind.

I was told not to put anything on the incisions while there is still dermabond on them. I only stuck with the ice which did help. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
